139. I kind of agree, honestly. Not physical pain, but it does hurt. I used to think I didn't like the Beatles when I was a kid because I thought Beatles = "Yellow Submarine"... I know better now.

Why should one feel bad about denouncing incest? Some people are really squicked out by it. Unless you meant the slash part, in that case, well...some people don't like slash? The wording in this secret kind of confuses me, tbh =/

It's one thing to be squicked by incest; it's perfectly reasonable, in fact. Nothing wrong with going around saying it squicks you, either. But directly denouncing people terrible for shipping incest and/or telling them to stop shipping it... I think it's wrong. Live and let live. The things that make RL incest such a bad thing -- abuse/abuse of power, coercion, etc. are usually not present in fiction -- because RL incest is largely non-consensual, and fictional incest is largely consensual, so liking incest in fiction is a pretty far cry from condoning it in reality. Parent-child is a touchier issue than sibling-sibling, though.

That's my take.

OK, when you put it that way, it makes more sense. Incest ain't my thing, but if other people like it, I'm not gonna bug them about it.

But fic not addressing things like skeevy power issues and the possibility of coercion doesn't mean they don't exist - it doesn't matter how loudly a son says "YES", that doesn't remove the existing power structure. TBH I'd prefer if incest were written more often with more awareness of the subtler power issues rather than "there's no explicit abuse of the power in this relationship so we're golden" (but, then, it's fantasy, and how fun is it to reign in every fantasy with real world concerns?).

(Not that I consider that an excuse for hating on what people ship; who cares what gets people off as long as they don't lose the disconnect between fantasy and reality?)

You do have a point. One of my main ships is an incestuous pairing with a real power dynamic issue, and I do wish we got more fic that addressed the coercion and guilt and power-plays more often. But I still think in fiction, even when addressing those issues, it's more likely to come out as "they both want it, even if it's horribly messed up," rather than real life where mutuality is extremely unlikely.

But that's debatable, true. The main point was "don't rag on other people for their ships," and I'm glad we can agree on that one.

What's wrong with "Yellow Submarine"? It's one of my favorite songs. ;_;

I actually like it better now then I did as a kid. Not my favorite, but fun to just start singing with friends. But it's very straightforward and not all that musically interesting, and I wasn't really listening to lyrics at that age. Plus, overplay when I was young, I think.

I've always been very about the lyrics so I guess that's where we differ. I understand how it's not musically interesting though.
