I do write in English (even though it's not my first language), but for small fandoms and get so happy I get a mail about someone leaving kudos. Kudos are great!

I know this feel. I'd consider myself lucky to get 50 kudos. Not bc small fandom but what I enjoy writing is very very niche.

Hell sometimes I feel lucky not to get hate

...yep. Also writing in English, but I went from huge fandoms with ongoing canon back to my favorite fandom/characters which is a single video game released 20 years ago.

I like what I'm writing and am having fun, but man. You can tell I'm not in it for the kudos, hahah. Every time I do get one on something that isn't ten years old (not that I don't appreciate them on the old fic, I'm glad I'm still making people happy in those fandoms), I get so stupidly excited. It does not happen often.

Actually though, one thing that makes me feel a lot better about not getting kudos/comments anymore - I also get no hits. There's stuff that's been sitting there for months and has like 7 hits and one kudos, and I mean.. that's a pretty good ratio of people who read it to people who liked it enough to leave kudos.

what's the video game?

Vagrant Story. Same creative team and world as Final Fantasy Tactics and (after VS) Final Fantasy 12 - and the director, Yasumi Matsuno, somehow just knows how to push every single button I have. I get the impression they let him just cut loose on this game, since it wasn't an official FF game that had to be mass-marketable.

I’m always surprised when people complain about “only” getting a hundred kudos, but I guess those people are used to getting more kudos than me. I got one this morning and was pretty thrilled.

I wrote ONE juggernaut fic in a big fandom and when I get a kudos email I wonder if it'll be for other stories but it never is!

It's not even my best story, by a long shot.

I write in some medium to large fandoms and some really small ones and I always cater my expectations to the fandom/ship I'm writing for.

Getting 100+ kudos in my medium fandoms? Great! Love it, I'd probably be a little disappointed if I got less than 50 though honestly because I know that I could get more, but at the same time if I did I'd assume I'd written something the fandom isn't into, which is fair. Writing in small or dead fandoms and getting barely 10 over a month? Great! Because there's almost no one here anymore so even those 10 feel good. It really is a matter of perspective to me.

Agreed. My fandom isn't completely tiny, but it is small, and especially my ships are small. 50 kudos would be amazing. Honestly I'm happy with every single one I get. Just getting notification that I've gotten a single new kudo makes me really happy.

LMAO, I have one fic with 0 kudos. I'm still pretty proud of it, though, and even thinking about writing other stuff for the fandom even though apparently I'm the only person into the thing. I'm good at playing the long game, though. I've gotten comments years and years after I published a fic, and I think sometimes people just need time to find your stuff.

Same here! But that's what happens when you write in old microfandoms. I still reckon it was a good story.

I was gonna ask "does that really happen?" and then remembered a writer in my old fandom having a complete mental breakdown because they only got 50+ kudos on a fic they just started when their older works had hundreds of them, no joke.

But yeah, I don't write often but getting kudos regardless, even if it's just one or two for a really niche pairing is nice.

I mean...I don't think it's crazy to see what your fic is getting compared to other similar ones in your fandom and have feelings about it. Like, obviously the fics you're talking about aren't in the same contexts as the smaller fandom ones, and the motivations between fics might be entirely different.

but i also hate whinging about kudos, what to do, what to do.

I'm thrilled to get one kudos! "Only 50" kudos T__T

(Anonymous) 2021-07-27 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I did a podfic recently that got 20 whole kudos and I was *so shocked*...

(Anonymous) 2021-07-27 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... I'd be thrilled with 50. I have one that didn't get a single kudos for over 6 months... but it was literally the only fic in that "fandom" (er, "category" -- there IS no fandom). I think it now has 2 or 3, several years later. It's all relative, as others have said. I don't even LOOK at the fic pages for any fandom I'm writing in because I just don't want to know. I would torture myself with comparisons. Easier just to avoid it altogether.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-27 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
I write rarepairs (in English), so I feel ya. I can't even bother with their humble-brag anymore, it's all noise at this point.

Every kudos I get makes me incredibly happy.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-27 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I once wrote a 100k + fic for a smaller fandom in my otriginal mother tongue and it took me a year and a lot of effort (I'm one of those authors who works slow and painfully), and boy, was the ratio of effort to response depressing at the times :) But again, small potential audience = small scale of response.
