I think both of the original dresses looked much better. The modified one looks like something Lucy Ricardo might have worn when she was enceinte with Little Ricky.

Enceinte was the word they used on "I Love Lucy" because they didn't want to say pregnant (or I guess anything too much like it). Anyway, to me, it looks a little like a 50s maternity dress.

They weren't allowed to say "pregnant" or anything like it but got away with "enceinte" because it sounded fancy! She was actually pregnant with her first child when they filmed the pilot but they just didn't mention it because it was thought it would scare off advertisers, and it was in bad taste(!) to mention it.
