Do you cosplay/interact in large fandom gatherings or cons?

If so, do you go strictly by your handle or do you use your real name or an alias? How does this all work?!

Sincerely,

A danish person who wants to be more involved, but is also quite private lol

I usually have my handle on my con badge, so people who may have seen me around the internet will know who I am (which is how I got recognized as "hey you wrote that thing" at cosplay gatherings, I'll be talking to someone and they notice the badge), or if I meet someone cool they can find me later, but in person most people seem to go by their real names. I have a few friends I tend to refer to as their handle (or a shortened "nickname" version, like they call me "pants", hahaha).

Also have attended a few local cosplay gatherings outside of cons, so no name badges, it was just people hanging out, going by their real names.

There are also the occasional people you'll meet who only want to be called by their character's name in cosplay, which I find a bit odd, though obviously most of us will answer to our character's name in cases like some stranger yelling across the hall "Hey Sephiroth! Can I get your picture?!" XD

I haven't been to a con since 2014, but I used to go to one about once a year. The con I was going to let you use whatever name you wanted on your badge (nickname, fandom name, online alias, etc.) but I always just used my real name since 1) I didn't have one main fandom or one main alias so if I used an online alias probably no one would recognize it, 2) I'd been going to cons since I was a kid and everyone IRL knew I was an SF&F geek so hiding my identity at a con would be pointless and I never felt weird about using my real name, but 3) I came up in online fandom when it was still the done thing to keep your online and IRL identities entirely separate so I didn't want people connecting the two even in the unlikely chance that someone recognized my alias.

You can find out what a con allows you to put on your badge - it will probably be on the form you use to sign up (i.e., you sign up under your real name but then there might be a line to fill in your preferred badge name). As to what name you use, that's up to you.
