101. I've never been into the shipping part of fandom; it often seems less about the characters and more about fandom identity and Being Right. Anyways, the only reason I'm commenting is that I wanted to say that you've made a nicely designed secret.

110. ...yeah, you need to stop giving people your respect based on their shipping opinions, strangero. It says a lot more about you than it does them.

111. I love the book Coraline, and I haven't seen the movie yet. Don't tell me they give her a boy sidekick. Is that one of the ghosts? What about the cat? The fabulously aloof cat!?

155. But! But! But! He's the Cylon that's closest to sanity (well, excluding You Know Who). Hell, he's the CHARACTER that's closest to sanity. That's gotta be worth something, right?

163. People are already RPing Lightning? WTF?

166. Yeah, I don't know how I started caring, but I did. They're both so socially awkward, Peggy in a less obvious way, but they fit together.

She does get a buddy, but he really adds to the story more than anything else. He's not one of the ghosts - his name is Wybie, and he's the grandson of the house's landlady. He's mostly there as a window character, to give Coraline somebody to talk to while the cat, you know, doesn't talk, and helps fill in a bit of the back story.

Ok. I should remember that movies and books are different mediums and thus characters need people to talk to, conveying things which would previously be left to narration.

But what's this about the cat not talking? While in the Other world he does, right?

Sure does, I just meant for while Coraline's in the real world. Actually, as a matter of fact, the Other Wybie doesn't talk at all. He can't.

To answer your questions:

No, he's just some neighborhood kid. Doesn't affect the story too much, but he does help her out in the end during a certain scene by the well.

The cat is still there and he is fantastic. |Db

Ok, phew! Maybe I should start watching movies before I get all offended by an imagined "The Adventures of Coraline and Wybie!" Like that terrible Card Captors dub.

Already I've been seeing commercials for Coraline which emphasizes zaniness, adventure, and fun... which is in Coraline, but that's in between the nightmare moments... and am left thinking, "Wow, that theatre is going to be filled with crying, frightened toddlers and angry parents."

OH, there were. I work at a movie theatre and we have the 3D version, and there's always a few kids crying when we see the Other Mother go all creepy for the first time.

And then there's the giant watermelon granny boobs that make even the adults cry a little inside, but that was just played for laughs. Oooooh god my eyes.

Dude, I was crying when I saw the Other Mother go all creepy for the first time. I wrote a paper on how Coraline was composed of nightmare tropes.

Oh it totally is. Can you imagine if Tim Burton was the one to make the movie? Not dissing Henry Selick in anyway, HELL no, but it would be a million times worse. NIGHTMARE FUEL UNLEADED RIGHT THERE.

Re: 111

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2009-02-16 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Burton's busy working with the most classic Nightmare Fuel of children's literature. We all know it well; Coraline is partly based on it, even.

Right, right. Any update on that? Last I saw was the crazy Hatter!Depp picture.

Well, Al Gore is seeking an injunction against it on the basis that the millions of children sleeping with their lights on come 2010 will suck the Earth dry.
