117. I think I was shipping it before that scene but the scene made me ship it even more!

144. I was out of the Bat fandom for YEARS and slotted back in quite sneakily about 18 months ago. To some people I was probably a relative newbie but honestly I haven't had that many problems. I'm glad you've found out that most of us are just happy we've got more people to talk to!

151. The Genii annoyed from the start! I love SGA so very much but one of my problems with it has always been that the villains are a bit weak for me. Michael was ok to start with but he soon outstayed his welcome. The only villain I still liked until the end was Todd and he was technically not much of a bad guy anymore.

OP 151

The problem with creating such powerful bad guys in a long running series is that after a while they have to become less powerful. They have to, or the story wouldn't work. There are ways around it but it's hard to do when you come in at it from a position of weakness. Eventually you have to either destroy them some how, or they have to become weaker relative to you. Or they dominate you like in Terminator.

And I think after a while writers like to make the bad guys more level, or they end up making them pathetic (aka the Kazon in Voyager).

The Reavers in Firefly are greatly done because they're not villians due to power but because of sheer fear of their nature, their complete inhumanity and barbarity, they're figures in the mist that don't show up much but when they do they let loose and FEAR.

The Wraith don't do that. The Genii have never done that, though they were they were better in season one. But they've been defeated so many times and too easily to be good bad guys. Michael too.

Todd works because he was never supposed to be a bad guy per se. He was in a position where he could turn on you, and you feel his danger but he chooses to put that aside (a show of power on his side). He isn't a friend per se (though he has a bond with John) but he isn't an enemy. Just very very dangerous.

If that ramble made much sense. I think I'll shut up now too, lol.

Oh don't worry it makes sense! It's given me a lot to think about as well.

I think poor SGA suffers from the fact it's also a spin-off. If you're also a SG1 fan, you've seen it ALL before with the Goa'uld. That's also why the Ori, although talked up as a big threat, weren't actually that threatening considering the Goa'uld started out just as powerful and then look what happened. Anyway, I'm perhaps being unfair because this is a long running series we're talking about but for me part of the Stargate franchise's downfall was that there was nowhere left to go with making a villain effective unless the good guys were to finally lose.

And yeah, Michael became less and less effective. Even when he had a scheme that looked like it had done the SGA team for good, you KNEW what was coming because it had happened so many times before. I thought it was fitting that he got such an anti-climactic death.

Oh yes I do love that about Todd. I think that's why he never stopped being effective for me because he wasn't just The Enemy. He makes no apologies for what he is yet will cuddle up to the team (and especially Sheppard) when it suits him. I loved not knowing how his appearances in the show were going to turn out. I also enjoyed his interaction with Sheppard.

There is that, it's there in most shows you'll watch that plan to have length, because how else could it be? Some may have guts and change it around, make the bad guys WIN and give that impact but most wont. I can't think of any that did off hand.

Enterprise had this problem, in that we'd seen bad guys become weaker and weaker in the earlier Trek series, and in fact we'd already seen the future. We knew it thus any chance of the Xindi (alien race bend on destroying Earth, main theme in one of the seasons) was going to fail right off from the start, no sense of danger at all. They could've made the Xindi win but we all knew Paramount wouldn't let it.

Skiffy could have let the Wraith win, but they couldn't and so though they'd have all these plans any time they went up against our heroes they would loose and their power lessens and so does their credibility as bad guys. If you want good ones they need to have some sort of power and keep it, and as I've said most cannot do this. Wont do what they have to. Or create baddies with no plan to take over or rule or anything, but just behave like Reavers and not be battled off.

We KNEW it wasn't going to work, ever, so they're bad at it. They keep on failing so they're crap at it.

And Todd..... gotta love him. I met the actor who plays him at a convention and he is just about the biggest John/Todd slasher you will ever meet. Or that's the mask he puts on. But the man (the character as we see him on TV and how he is portrayed) is very very clever. He's willing to mess with your mind (which is apparently part of his second to last appearance) and enjoy it. He's a Wraith, he has no shame about it and what it means. But he wants to come out on top and he's figured out that he can do that more easily with the assistance of Atlantis rather than in opposition to it and so that is how he works. But he could still go.... as you said, you never know how he will turn out exactly. A very well done character, well written and well acted by a guy who clearly puts a lot of thought into it.

And have to love that interaction with John, I don't really slash them but it's something to watch an savour.
