Re: 118
As for me, it honestly comes down to "I just don't relate." I will not lie to you: Early on my fandom, religion played a role in my opinions of the slashy, but I've changed a lot since my early fandom days. I've read slash and yaoi things/looked at artwork, and have even experimented in writing things with slashy/yaoi undertones, myself, if/when I thought it fit specific characters. ( And I honestly can't peg Knives/Legato in my main fandom of Trigun as anything *but* "classic yaoi," seme/uke - it just fits those characters).
However, in the end, I just found I couldn't write it well and didn't have much interest in it. I tend to avoid reading it in all my fandoms - the fact of the matter being that I just don't relate well to it. I'm almost aesexual... "straight," but barely - barely anything at all. Man/woman is what I best relate to and best "feel" when it comes to romantic fanfic and art (and even then, I dislike that which is overtly sexual, I gravitate toward the non-porn). I'd rather read and write and paint gen most of the time. What romance I do write tends to be subtle, or a matter of "they are married with children, but I'm not writing about them *making* the children, sorry." Where some people find yaoi "hot," I just don't, and I don't gravitate toward "that which makes me hot" to begin with. Am I an unsual person? Yep. A freak? Probably, but I like what I like.
What I most relate to is -- the old-fashionedness I grew up with and -- to feeling, emotions, rather than the physhical aspects of love, and while I'm sure there are yaoi writers and artists that strive toward that, most of what I know from my encounters with yaoi fans tells me that most of them have a focus on the physical. I once had a friend who tried to drive me into yaoi fandom. She probably had a big impact on my "Yaoi, must avoid like the ebola virus" attidue now... EVERYTHING to her (in our fandom, even just in casual AIM conversation) was an excuse for a dirty joke, and she acted like her life depended upon everyone else in the fandom (including me) believing that every guy was going with every other guy off-screen and that it was CANON, CANON, CANON (when I just failed to see it). This person really treated everyone who didn't agree with her yaoi fantasies like they had no brains or were evil, which was part of the reason why I become not-friends with her. I know that not all yaoi fans share the past behavior of this person, but I've seen quite a few who... kinda do....
Sorry for the long-windedness. The short from the long on my reasons for shying away from the yaoi side of fandom is: "I find porn boring" and "I just don't relate to it."
Re: 118
You're not a freak! I totally get what you're saying. Personally, I don't even find yaoi 'hot' and usually skip over plotless porn. If it's one of those really sweet, meaningful sex scenes that actually mean something, I'll read it, but reading about my favorite couples going at it makes me D:
I'm really sorry you had that experience, I can't stand those types of fangirl (lol, I had a similarly bad experience with Naruto het fandom a year back...Came out relatively unscathed but I can't look at NaruHina the same way, sob) Sadly there are a lot of yaoi fangirls like that, just like there are a lot of rabid het fans ^^; I make jokes like LOOK AT THOSE SMOULDERING BEDROOM EYES HIBARI JUST GAVE TSUNA~, lol, but I know it's not and never will be canon, and people who take their fantasy yaoi pairings as seriously as your ex-friend seriously need a reality check. But at the same time, frick, flashbacks to the NaruHina fangirls screaming it was two-sided canon...;.;
I like yaoi for the same reason I like het, because I love the idea of certain individual people being together. I've only had one of my ships actually ever become canon, and while it was awesome, it doesn't really bother me whether my pairings do or not. I like shipping because it's fun, and it's all pretend really (gen is also awesome. I love good introspective gen fics ^^)
Re: 118
I'm semi-in, semi-out of that fandom now. I recently became obsessed with something else - something with a longtime fandom but I'm relatively new to creatively participate in it. (Legend of Zelda). Shipping there runs the gamut, main character Link seems to be the fandom bicycle, and most of the fandom seems het-geared. I write mostly introspective gen for it, much like in my other/previous main fandom, but, you know? I've written three different major pairings so far (things that some people seem to fight over) and I'm all "Eh? I just write the plots as they come to me." - I pretty much obey the plotbunnies, in shipping as in gen and I don't really see why there must be fighting or a big deal made.
I mean, it's fanwork, it's not like I own the property - it's not worth it - I'll save my "adamant" over shipping for my own original works, because my word is "Word of God" there. (And even if my work becomes known, I doubt I'll care what fans do with it). Otherwise, I see fandom as something to be enjoyed, a shared love of someone else's story. When fandom stops being fun because everyone's fighting, people are treating you like an idiot for not shipping as they do/sharing their opinion, or are branding people some bad thing wholesale because they aren't as "edgy" or "cool" over something... it's, you know... "Why?"
My prev/main fandom really taught me a lot on this. I'm still in it, as in, I'm still creatively partcipating, throwing out a fanwork here and there, but I'm one of the very few, it seems. I was involved in its fandom "heyday" and I remember all the stupid fights that went on over it (not just shipping, but other things), and how seriously I took it -- and it all seems stupid to me now because "everybody's gone." Everyone seems to have packed up and moved onto other fandoms (at least partially, if not wholly) showing that, in the end, this anime/manga really wasn't as serious business as people made it out to be. All the people who fought over little issues (and shipping) like it was life or death seem to be "Eh, I'm bored now," which means that maybe the issues in this fandom weren't quite as serious as people thought they were.
As it stands, when I write a fanfic for it anymore (as said, I still do), I can't help but think about all the fights and how small/nonexistant the fandom is now. It does add meloncholy to my writing... And I think the reason why LoZ has gotten more of my attention now is precisely because I'm a "fandom newbie" and have yet to get into any big fights (and I have the attitude already of ship-fights in it are stupid, since the main character is meant to be "whom you want or need him to be" anyway).
Re: 118
A few years ago, when I was really into LoZ fandom(I still love it, but I'm not so active in it),I was a hardcore Zelda/Link shipper - I couldn't stand seeing him shipped with anyone else(I did make a minor exception for Malon, though, since she was my second favourite female LoZ character after Zelda herself). Luckily, I had the good taste to stay out of shipping wars(I didn't even know about them back then). Now, I have a much more relaxed view on shipping in this fandom(and other fandoms in general), and even though Zelda/Link is still kinda dear to me(it was one of my first OTP's), it's not the end of the world if someone likes Link/*insert character here*. Though, I kinda wish there would be more fics of other pairings that aren't Link/*insert character here*
Telma/Renado, anyone?.Re: 118
Link x Zelda is the main/popular pairin, and I'll write it if my fanfic plot ideas go that way, but I've been just as easy to write Link x Midna, and even one story that was both L/M and Link x Ilia. Most of my fics - gen. I've been submitting my stuff to one website and message board where the Admin is die-hard L/Z, but is laid back, nice, and finds other pairings interesting. So, my experience with LoZ, so far, has been quite positive. It must be that I'm just going to the right places.
I think I'll do alright with Zelda fandom, *just* because Trigun fandom really put me through the meat grinder. I mean, Trigun was very, very gen - the author of the manga himself outright said he didn't do well with romance and he prefered to show the (general type) connections between people. People whom the main character got emotionally close to in the course of both the anime and the manga had a bad habit of dying. Even when Vash told Meryl (in the manga) that he swore he would come back to her - circumstances prevented him from doing so. Yet, those of us who insisted that "Trigun is a gen series, ship what you want and have fun, but none of it is strictly canon, so we all have freedom" got called "homophobes" and the like by the more rabid yaoites out there. There were some die-hard het shippers that were almost as bad at some points. There was quite a lot of ... "sides" and yelling at each other, and condescending to each other for a while (even people who'd scream if you prefferred gen). It just wore me out and left me with the attitude of "Bleh."
So, I guess I'm sort of prepared when it comes to Zelda fandom. If someone screams at me for writing a fic that is or isn't a certain ship, I'll just say "Did you read the author notes before you clicked on it?"
Re: 118
Do you mind linking your fanfics? I would love to read them :)
And Links to Tales of Link...
I like Link/Midna a lot, and I don't mind the idea of him falling in love with her in her imp form at all (I rather like it from a "physical apperance doesn't matter in love" perspective)... I just don't like to think of them... em...consumating anything with her in that form. I can see where Imp Midna is a real squick for people, though. But I also like Link/Zelda (in all the game universes, even TP) and Link/Ilia, though I've yet to write much of it. As I said, I'm mainly about the gen.
Anyway, there's a couple of places to find my Zelda fanwork:
http://www.northcastle.co.uk/guild/fanfocus/ff_shadsie.html - My Fan Focus page at North Castle. The interview was done a few months ago and it doesn't have my most recent works listed because the webmistress updates NC just once a month. On the upside, you can see some of my artwork if you click the gallery square, including an image of TP version Link done on an Etch-A-Sketch. North Castle is a great little site, with a focus on the classics and a friendly little message board that I frequent.
http://www.fanfiction.net/~ladyshadowcat - The island I live on in a sea of crap - in other words, my fanfiction.net profile. Forgive the longwindedness in my profile, it's just I've done work for many fandoms over the course of several years and I set it up so people know what to expect. My most recent Zelda fanfictions are here as well as loads for Trigun and a few for other fandoms. Ignore the Pokemon work, please.
The Link/Midna + Link/Ilia fic of mine I mentioned is "Desert Sunset Painted in Shades of Fire." I'm actually... ridiculously proud of that one. It features an aged Link sparing thoughts for Midna at the end of his life, even though he wound up falling in love with and marrying Ilia - he deals with the memories of both women, both important to his life.
A lot of my stuff (especially for Zelda) is fairly tragic and meloncholy, be warned.
