I used the track button, as always on f!s.

I suspect you are feeling quite gleeful at the "victory," but it came with a really incredible cost. post-COE!Jack's not real!Jack either, and ABI turned out to be "you can kill anyone but Ianto, don't take him!"

I thought it was portrayed as a realistic relationship, not yet fully sketched, still with secrets and dismissive moments and taking for granted and imbalanced idolising and uncertainties, that both partners valued in different ways and the one left behind will clearly mourn it. Jack wouldn't say he loved him, but even my J/I-weary soul saw that he did. Not in "a love of a lifetime", because, really, Jack will have so many of those as to lose count, but the grief and despair and affection and yes, love, were plain as day.

I hope you won't entirely discount it, because the aftermath of the death (the actual death was a bit corny but, ymmv) and the actions that follow, quite frankly, John Barrowman knocked it out of the park in a way that I didn't even think he was capable of. The only time he's come close is that look he gave when the TARDIS vanished from the game station.

And his final scene, with the several intertwined dead character's themes playing behind it as he recites all those who he has lost? Holy fucking shit, man. It's promising, in that Jack can start all over after some serious healing, but what he had to do to get there was harsh.

Still, lots to play with in the fanon world for all sides, though.

As you can imagine, I see it slightly differently. Jack's a mess. And he's gonna be a mess for awhile. A mess who fucks his way through time and space making up for a lot of lost time. (Let's assume he was being monogamous because of the emotional blackmail.) I see him diving into a threesome with the first pretty things he can find in the first space-bar he lands in.

I think Jack would have reacted pretty much the same way to the death of any team member who'd been unlucky enough to end up in that room. This is guilt-ridden, abandonment issue Jack. Do you think he wouldn't have been screaming pretty much the same thing for Gwen or Tosh or Owen? Obviously the writers put Ianto in the room so that could be the scene, but it don't spell anything more special about Ianto than any of Jack's other Torchwood shags over the years.

The inter-twined names didn't start or end with Ianto. It's like pizza, Ianto, save the world.

Pretty much every single spoiler for how much Jack wuvs Ianto or wants Ianto proved not as bad as expected, including the famous "gagging for it scene."

Plus, even if you take every single moment and spin it the schmoopiest possible J/I way, it still ended with dead Ianto. No more J/I. EVER, which is more than I could have hoped for. (And I'm sorry, if he couldn't say it in THAT moment of all moments....not so much.

And come now...losing Ianto vs losing the DOCTOR? Really? Not even close.

If there is a TW S4, it will Jack and ABI. Either Jack/Gwen or Jack and his friendship with Gwen, the one he actually confided in. Since we know there will be Jack in at least one of the Who specials, I have to believe there will be the swagger and the smile and "Captain Jack Harkness," and he will be real!Jack.

I know it's a bleak and ugly world for a lot of people in TW land right now, but as a single-issue voter, I'm not complaining at all.

Thanks again. I'll be doing my post about the whole week in a few days and thanking your lovely anonymous self, who-ever you are. No, I won't link over here, so the stalkers won't come bothering you.

Huh. I always used to think the anonymeme was unfair to you, but, I must hand it to you. You really do have a fascinating lens on the world. I'm sort of glad I don't share it, if I may be so blunt.

One point I will clarify: I didn't say Jack was as upset over all of this as he was over the Doctor. I said John Barrowman's acting was the best it has ever been since that scene at the end of "Parting of the Ways."

I wouldn't get my hopes too far up regarding your real!Jack in either Doctor Who or Torchwood Series 4, by the way. While Doctor Who is a given, I think you'll be surprised by the context of his appearance. As for Series 4 of Torchwood, expect a whole new construct, very likely not including Jack. But what do I know? It's not like I have a history of providing information months in advance. :)

Like I said: single issue voter. I got what I needed and I'm happy for now. I can watch Season 1 & 2 of TW again. I can look at my action toys. I can listen to John's music. All of that was being poisoned for me by the fears of canon schmoop.

So I assume DW Jack will not have his swagger or smile? It's a pity, but he's still got thousands of years to get them back. (Even if he doesn't forget Ianto in a thousand years, he's still got a lot of thousands after that.)
