Games thread!

Where have you seen this trope? I can't pick a side without examples.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-01 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You ought to be comparing Jet with Katara and Sokka; Jet is a deliberate mirror to their situation, not Zuko’s.

I adore this film. I wish more people understood it! I’m convinced the initial bad reception came from not getting what the film was going for, it’s so sarcastic.

I really want to know what fic this is.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-01 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I just assume the writer is making the "always female" character a self-insert.

I'm not really interesting in reading those.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-01 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who reads them, it's like half and half and depending on the gender / sexuality of the author. Sometimes it's really obviously self insert-y, other times it's super obvious the author would like to ship those characters but is homo/bi-phobic.

I’m sorry but I really hate secrets like this. Why not put it in a comment on the fic itself instead of wasting the time of everyone in this community? It’s too vague to matter and too specific to be relatable.

Venting maybe? And at the end they do kind of imply they want opinions about this kind of situation.

To which I would say: ...Yeah, unless the author specifically asked for concrit, don't leave a comment telling them it was all good "except I hate this ship". If you want to leave a comment, maybe tell them some of the things they did well and the positive impact.

I'm pretty sure all of us have seen those fics that do some things really really well and then just completely go off the rails with some particular aspect that we try to ignore. :P

Yeah, I side eye these fic a little too. And frankly, I include A/B/O within this umbrella of issues too. So many ways of making slash fic more heteronormative...

(Anonymous) 2021-08-01 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That actually sounds amazing. I will definitely be watching this at our next bad film night!

(Anonymous) 2021-08-01 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure. But there are also ways to bring these kinds of things up without saying “I hate this ship”. As an author, if you ASK me about something or even politely say this one bit didn’t work for you, I’m very happy to discuss my writing process and opinions or even be sure to tag for pairings or things I don’t realize might turn people off. If someone vents obscurely to F!S about it, well, I can’t do anything.

Hell, I wouldn’t have a problem if this secret was actually phrased as a request for opinions or suggested solutions. That last bit just feels a bit too tacked on, for me, compared to the rest of the totally useless and irrelevant points the OP felt were vital to the secret. I guess I have too strong of opinions about what actually should be posted to a community like this.

I love this movie in all its ridiculous.

Fair enough. Most of it is something aimed at one particular person in a particular situation. But then again, we have stuff like ... I think it was just last week where someone had the secret like "dear fandom friend, I'm sorry I had a sex dream about you and you probably wouldn't have enjoyed it based on how you write smut" which is similarly specific. But definitely a secret, and amusing.

And indeed, I might add something like "I'm not sure where X/Y came from - was there something I was missing?" if it's an author that replies to comments or was otherwise shown to be responsive to feedback. But if they aren't, even leaving a comment about it might do little more than venting to F!S.

...And now I'm vaguely wondering if a comment I got years ago like "Wow, I never thought of these two characters as a ship before!" was a subtle framing of the same thing. (I never replied because I just thought "...weird, even people who ship the popular ship generally agree these two were an item beforehand, but glad I introduced this person to it.")
