I agree Hayden did exactly what he was supposed to for Anakin. I think the reason people didn't like his performance is more because they were expecting something different from the character.

Padme's a bit stilted at times, but then she gets some of the worst dialogue as well.

Completely agree. I think a big part of picking Christensen apart then was that people were so obsessed with Darth Vader that seeing Lucas' portraying him as a whiny boy who couldn't control his emotions made them mad, and so they put that frustration on the actor. None of the acting in those films is particularly great, and I don't think it was solely the actors' fault.
Kind of feel sorry for everyone in the prequels, especially Ahmed Best.
