(Anonymous) 2021-08-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)Not that I think he was good but that everyone else was nearly as bad and just he took the brunt of the hate because Natalie Portman and Ewen McGregor were slightly better. But only slightly.
However, I don't think it was their fault. The big problem lay in the dialog they were given (it was genuinely terrible) and how they were directed. They all seemed to be told to speak in a strange over-enunciated, unnatural cadence that was really unpleasant to listen to and was almost impossible to deliver emotional nuance with.
Why does space not have any contractions? Why must everyone hit all the hard consonants? Because George Lucas says so apparently.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-05 12:32 am (UTC)(link)I will say, I later saw an indie film with him that was made right before the Phantom Menace and he was actually good in it. But nobody saw it compared to Star Wars, so no one wanted to cast him in a big role again.
