I recently rewatched all of the Star Wars films and I revised my opinion on Hayden Christensen.

Not that I think he was good but that everyone else was nearly as bad and just he took the brunt of the hate because Natalie Portman and Ewen McGregor were slightly better. But only slightly.

However, I don't think it was their fault. The big problem lay in the dialog they were given (it was genuinely terrible) and how they were directed. They all seemed to be told to speak in a strange over-enunciated, unnatural cadence that was really unpleasant to listen to and was almost impossible to deliver emotional nuance with.
Why does space not have any contractions? Why must everyone hit all the hard consonants? Because George Lucas says so apparently.

MacGregor and Portman also have the advantage that they've been good in other things

ayrt. Yep, He had this and then Jumper that got any press and none of it was good.

I will say, I later saw an indie film with him that was made right before the Phantom Menace and he was actually good in it. But nobody saw it compared to Star Wars, so no one wanted to cast him in a big role again.

I saw Jumper and yeah, he was awful in it

Maybe that one's not his fault either but he definitely was not good

Agreed. And they were also often acting into green screens, which adds to the stiltedness.

In the immortal words of Harrison Ford, "You can type this shit, George, but no-one can say it."
