I wouldn't call it evil, but yeah, it's wrong. Please, tell me your argument for being mean to people being okay.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I never said it is "okay"; I argued about it not being wrong. Opinions are opinions, ways of expression are ways of expression. It's a basic freedom you're free to complain against but not free to eradicate.

[identity profile] nakotaco.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because it's your opinion does not mean that it's not an opinion which is not insulting and degrading to someone else. For example: For a long, long time the prevailing "opinion" was that women were too stupid, weak, and easily influenced to be given a vote. That didn't make it right.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
An opinion is neither right or wrong. An opinion is an opinion. The act of not giving women the right to vote is, indeed, "evil"; but an opinion that states that women should not be given the right to vote it's essentially harmless. Since opinions never claim facts, they don't present logical proof of reality; they're just subjective views on the world that have no relevance whatsoever.

[identity profile] nakotaco.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That isn't true, though. Had the opinion that women were inferior not existed in the first place - if no-one had held that opinion - then women would have been enfranchised all along.

Opinions influence actions which have consequences. There's no possible way you can argue that that isn't true.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-18 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Opinions don't influence actions, ACTIONS INFLUENCE OPINIONS. Like it was stated before, "opinions don't exist in vacuum", or rather: OPINIONS AREN'T BORN OUT OF NOWHERE. Opinions are created through experience.

The idea "that women were inferior" wasn't an opinion; it was a "prejudice". A prejudice is something that influence humans actions and is created through previously pragmatical traditions or logical fallacies WITH FOUNDATION ON REALITY. Opinions are only ideas, expressions and words that were created on a personal basis. The expression of an opinion is not harmful, the problem comes when said opinion is taken as TRUTH... it which point it would stop being an opinion and become a prejudice. But the problem wouldn't lie in the expression of the opinion but rather on society itself.

[identity profile] nakotaco.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You're still missing my point, I think. What I'm saying is that all of those things were born out of someone's opinions. To continue the example of sexism against women, I cannot possibly trace that back through history to tell you who the first male was to have an opinion that a woman was inferior to him, but there's no doubt in my mind that that is what it was. It would either have been an opinion, or a fact, and since clearly it isn't a fact that women are inferior to men...

(Anonymous) 2009-02-19 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
No, you're placing the burden of responsibility on the wrong place. The burden isn't on the opinion or on the someone that expressed it, the responsibility is on the society that transformed said opinion into a prejudice. The opinion isn't wrong or right, the opinion is subjective and harmless. Women or minorities aren't oppressed by opinions, they're oppressed by actions and power.

[identity profile] nakotaco.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'll say it again, since you seem to have missed it the first time: opinions form actions.

What you're saying is accurate and logical in the same way that communism is. It looks fantastic on paper, but apply it to reality, and people, and it doesn't work out so well. Opinions can very much be wrong.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-19 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Are you using the technical language of a particular philosophical movement? If you are, you should probably identify it as such, or no one's going to understand the necessary context. If not, then you should be aware that a prejudice is a type of opinion. They're not two different things in standard English. And opinions aren't merely individual, either; it's perfectly okay to talk about a society, a nation, a movement, a religion, an organization, or even a corporation having an opinion.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-19 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
They can go either way. It's just like the question, does are reflect society, or does society reflect art. My answer as always been both. It's the same thing with people opinions, they can start as harmless suggestions, but then someone will take that suggestion and evolve it into actions and prejudices. Then someone else could have witnessed an action that lead them to form an opinion or prejudice.

Also, some people can be very effected by words. You are assuming that actions and people speaking opinions can be different things. Do you not think that someone can mentally abuse someone as well as physically abuse someone? For example, let's say you have a significant other who expresses all their opinions about what a terrible person you are...that can be harmful for that person, just as much as if that significant other physically beat them.

Also, the definition of prejudice according to Merriam and Webster:

1: injury or damage resulting from some judgment or action of another in disregard of one's rights ; especially : detriment to one's legal rights or claims
2 a (1): preconceived judgment or opinion (2): an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge b: an instance of such judgment or opinion c: an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an individual, a group, a race, or their supposed characteristics.
