Lelouch is a clueless virgin who could have harbored romantic feelings toward any of various girls if he hadn't been so focused on revenge and NUNNALLYNUNNALLYNUNNALLYNUNNALLY. He was possibly starting to come into those feelings, but then Shirley had to up and die, and any ideas at romantic exploration was replaced by rage. And when he dealt with that rage, he started off on his deathquest, and there was absolutely no way he'd let himself get romantically involved with anyone while he's set himself to die. tl;dr: LOTS OF POTENTIAL WITH ANYONE, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. ALL THE SHIPPERS LOSE.

130) That's probably because many fans take romance over friendship simply because it's a lot harder to characterize friends well. It's not the romance that's the issue; it's the fans' bad characterizations.

Or it could be they are actually more interested in the romance, I have never head any writer bad or good complain about how hard it is to write friendships, mostly they want to write a romance because that is what interests them. So I think it just has to do with interest.

And I don't think either is easier then the other, they are just different.

I dunno. From what I've gathered, it seems far easier to write a mediocre romance than a mediocre friendship. I'll give that truly great fic of either genre are equally hard to write, though.

I think we're talking about slightly different things here. You're right--writers write romance because they want to write romance. I'm saying that readers often gravitate to romance because it (from what I've seen) is easier for most people to stomach a mediocre shipfic than a mediocre friendfic. And let's not kid ourselves here, there is an awful lot of mediocre or bad fic out there. In fact, I wouldn't hesitate to say that mediocre-to-bad shipfic dominates most fandoms.

I call myself a fan of gen, but I'm more a fan of awesome characterization. It's frustrating to see a mediocre author take characters that I love and write them badly in a way that leads to romance. There's some great shipfic out there, but sadly, they seem few and far between.

And I honestly think it is what most people want to read, I don't think most people think to the extent of whether it is easier or not easier or whatever, in most searches they are going to seek out the type of fic they want to read so it isn't even like they are going to directly compare a mediocre or bad ship!fic to awesome gen!fic, because they aren't seeking out that gen in the first place.

More people wantto read and write ship fic so there is more of it, which goes to laws of numbers for why there is so much bad fic.

I still think the argument though that writing relationships as a romance instead of a friendship means that the writer or reader doesn't know or respect friendships or whatever. The writers are diverse and just because they may ship one friendship romantically doesn't mean that they translate that to every friendship, which is I think the point of the original secret.
