There's a point where it's bad, and there's a point when you're just nit picking and making yourself miserable instead of enjoying something that isn't dripping with racism or sexism because it had s small fault here or there. And as there's PLENTY out there that IS, I don't really understand it either.

While it is true that nothing is perfect, and everything can have SOMETHING offensive in it, telling people that they should not allow themselves to be offended just denies them their rights as a human being.
Like, people are REALLY affected by stuff like racism/sexism/etc. And seeing a negative portrayal that is meant for humor by either exaggerating it or trivializing a person's suffering is wrong.
Hey, if you have the luxuray of choosing to never feel the affects of racism/sexism, good for you. Because not everyone enjoys that luxary.

I'm a gay female, I've run into social issues in fandom. I also live in a low income area that's mostly minorities. I deal with racism every day even though it's rarely directed at me and more often at my friends. I've still seen it's effects and dealt with them. I'm denied the ability to marry my GF of 8 years due to this kinda crap. Trust me. I know it's effects.
And, you know, I have never denied anyone the right to be upset about anything, even if I think they're being silly. If THEY feel like they can't be upset because *I* think it's dumb, that's their issue, not mine. If you REALLY think me expressing that I think some of fandom can get over the top about getting upset over social issues in media, you REALLY need a reality check about "human rights." I wonder if you really think that this is such a big deal if YOU'VE ever felt this stuff in real life, but I can't imagine you haven't. Media is a symptom of the social disease, and no, we should not ignore it, but imo if we tackle the bigger issues, these will solve themselves. Yes, you should cure the headache, but if you only focus on the headache, and ignore that it's caused by a brain tumor, you get no where.
Yes, there are issues. They are bad. And yes, I've faced them, both IRL and in fandom, and yes I've gotten my panties twisted about fandom shit that goes too far.
I've also seen plenty of people who get all wrapped up when it is, in fact, not THAT big a deal. Yes there are things that ARE, yes, I don't think people should ignore sexism/racism/homophobia because it's "fictional", but I also think there are people who take it way too far. And if you'd like details we can take this to PMs and I'd be more then willing to debate it further there.

The reason these things aren't enjoyable is because sometimes you can't get past them and still enjoy a show, so you want to make your concerns heard.
