There's a lot to unpack here, but I'll just address the main point: RL vs fandom has nothing to do with it.

People IRL aren't any different when it comes to actually spending money or time or effort that they don't really want to spend.

If they seem better IRL, it's because they're too polite to refuse when you're exerting pressure on them face to face.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Was OP "exerting pressure on them", though? Sending people the link to something they'd previously expressed interest in buying doesn't seem like a whole lot of pressure to me.

If you read the comment again, I didn't say OP was exerting pressure on their fandom friends. I said getting people to follow through and do things they aren't really interested in doing seems better in RL - because when you are face to face, you exert social pressure on your RL friends to not refuse.

But expecting people, even friends and family, to follow through on compliments and promises especially if they involve time and money and sales in particular, is an exercise in futility no matter how you met.

I'm not saying you're 100% wrong, but that's a depressing take. But then, I've bought friends' self-published books before as a show of support even without being "pressured" to do so face to face.

Related to #2: What do YOU think a reasonable price for an ebook is?

And do your standards differ between traditionally published vs. self-published? Edited vs. unedited?

What did you do today, FS?

Tell us about your Tuesday here!

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. It's a lot of pressure.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not depressing, it's a reality that every self published author or shop owner faces and learns from. When you try to sell a product you're on your own and your products have to stand for themselves without you. And you will then discover whether they can. That's how things go.

People like you are one of OPs three sales, unfortunately.

A ton of people wanted shit from me including our broker, our hazardous materials monitoring company, our driver monitoring company, and one of our 3PLs. Hopefully tomorrow less people will be hassling me.

I don't buy e-books, but if I were publishing them, I'd make the first one free then like 4.99 for the next ones in the series or something.

There are a billion 99 cent books out there and most of them are 99 cent quality and a waste of time. There are a ton of crappy free ones too, but free at least expands your potential audience and gives you a chance to hook them into your world to sell the next.

not to sound defensive, but that may be... a bad friends issue, not a fandom friends issue. i'm sorry i can imagine it was very hurtful
