Wait, what's this earning points on Amazon thing?

Yeah, I do this with most media if I can't find a preview (for books) or demo (for video games). Honestly, I think it's a fair approach. You should be able to properly assess the quality of a product before you actually drop money on it.

You should be able to get a chapter preview from the sites that sell it.

I have the disposable income right now, and I'm good with the idea of purchasing a book I might not like, so I pre-ordered it. If the translation doesn't jive with me, then I suppose I won't purchase further volumes. Not that I think future volumes are "in danger" or whatever if I don't personally purchase one, but it feels better to me? On a personal level.

Usually, there's some sort of sample you can read somewhere before purchasing (maybe once the books are being sold regularly?), but I'm not entirely sure how this whole process is going to work.

I'm waiting for a friend of mine to tell me if the translation is worth it. Though I seem to remember reading somewhere that the same people who did the fan translations are doing the professional translation? IDK, this isn't a fandom of mine so much as a friend's fandom, and I see what THEY are posting.

it's only the same translators for the other two series, not for MDZS. the official translators aren't connected to the fan ones at all for that one; I'm REALLY interested to see the approach they take.
