AYRT - I think you could argue that Colbert started out as satire, but moved into (and embraced) trolling once he realized how close his satire was to certain views of reality.

That's definitely fair. I think at the time The Colbert Report was still airing, *I* wasn't aware of just how insane certain factions had gotten; I appreciate him all the much more in hindsight because he really was dead-on, and I had no idea.
