I rather like the epilogue. The story started with Harry wanting a family, it ended with him having a family. It started with Harry going to Hogwarts, it ended with him sending his kids to Hogwarts. It was written in a much simpler style than the rest of the book, and it was a much simpler time than the rest of the book. Full circle. I liked it.

This. So. Much.

That's kind of exactly why I don't like it. All that chaos and angst and work and dying and the world is no different. Same shit, different day.

Not saying you're wrong and I'm right; just, it seems to me that many of the people who hate it, hate it for the same reason that the people who loved it, love it.

I think that a lot of the people who became fannish about HP during the period that Books 3, 4 and 5 were coming out liked some of the morally ambiguous, dystopic, complex themes that were hinted at in those books, which disappeared in books 6 and 7. We saw something in the books that JKR never intended, and our expectations were raised. I doubt I will read her future works.

I've learned that sometimes the stuff I like most about a canon is the stuff the author cares least about and may have even thrown in more or less accidentally or without any intention of following up on it, and that authors don't always intend the complexities that can be drawn from the text. (This has been helpful, since I also like Twilight, but realise full well that a lot of what I love about Twilight isn't what Stephenie Meyer likes about Twilight.) This has been a valuable lesson. But kind of a painful one.

1 and 2 would never have made me a fan. It was POA that made me a fan. And if I hadn't encountered the series till after HBP, I would also have not been fannish about HP. It was those years of complexity and uncertainty that I loved.
