So it's wrong to say people are stupid because they don't like something but ok to say that people who like something are trying to seem smart i.e. are stupid?

Nope. I didn't call them stupid, I called them pretentious.

I took 'trying to seem smart' to mean that they weren't actually smart as you'd used the word pretentious already. But then again, it is 2.50am and I should probably be sleeping off my dental surgery.

I tend to think people who feel the need to prove their intellectual superiority with their love of the Matrix movies as the only evidence... are probably not as smart as they think they are. And perhaps it was poor wording, I didn't mean that everyone who likes the Matrix movies is like that or everyone who likes anything they deem "smart" is like that, I meant that some people who aren't particularly intelligent do like things they don't even understand, because they want to appear intelligent to other people. Which is why a person's taste in movies or even literature or academic subject or anything else for that matter isn't a good way to judge whether a person is smart or not -- I can say I like philosophy or astrophysics or neurosciences all I want, it doesn't mean I understand them and it doesn't mean I'm more intelligent than people who don't like those things.

And I didn't say that everyone who likes something is trying to seem smart, I just said that people do it all the time i.e. frequently.
