But did they let you keep watching Buffy?

This was my Mom, but instead she got me to watch christian cartoons for at least an hour a week so that I was allowed to watch whatever saturday morning cartoon I wanted.

At least you were allowed to watch Buffy. I was only allowed g-rated things and then occasionally PG things even as a teenager. i was allowed to read Harry Potter, but tv shows like Buffy and Charmed were banned.

When I was a kid, my mom told me she didn't like me watching Buffy because it was "too dark." I responded, incredulously, "Of course it's dark, that's when the vampires come out."

omg that is a great response to your mom!

This is hilarious to me, but also such a delightful little time capsule. Because the only reason this makes sense (and it actually does make a ton of sense) is because Doc's first seasons aired in 2001/2002, which was the same time that Buffy's sixth season aired. And S6 was...well, it was a lot.

I loved S6 as a teen, and I still love it today. But TBH? I would probably still get uncomfortable watching some of the Spuffy scenes with my father in the room. We've watched much more explicit shit together, but somehow the way Buffy handled stuff in S6 just...idk why, but I would still feel uncomfortable watching it with my dad.

Plus, on the non explicitly sexual front, there's the whole "our hero beats the shit out of her sexual partner" thing. And our other hero becoming a junkie complete with thinly veiled crack-den analogy. The season-long intimate relationship (for certain values of the word 'intimate') culminating in a drunk and violent attempted rape. Ah, and lest we forget, implied girl-on-girl cunnilingus (which to be extremely fucking clear, was very tame and no less "family friendly" than the scene with Willow and Oz's first time, but lbr it was 2001 and the homophobia was i n t e n s e, so I'm sure tons of people viewed it as "inappropriate for teens").

And then a whole lot of "smaller" stuff that was also really dark and heavy in its own right. And the tone of it all just made all the dark and fucked up stuff feel more dark and fucked up (again, excluding the cunnilingus, which had a dark undertone because of Willow's previous violation of Tara's mind, but was otherwise just a very tame implied sex scene).

I never watched Doc, so I can't speak to whether I agree that it was boring af or not. But it definitely gives me cloyingly wholesome vibes.

I just realized I never actually said, but in case it isn't clear: I don't agree that Buffy was inappropriate for teens, OR that there was anything inherently inappropriate about watching it with your teens. I just find it hilarious that Buffy, of all shows, was named "least appropriate" in that regard, and even more hilarious that, upon reflection (and a bit of date-checking) my response was basically, "Yeah, that checks out."

Just the image made me laugh out loud. I used to watch this. Like all the way lmao.

buffy IS inappropriate to watch with your children though

i remember modding a buffy forum back in the day where somebody was on there whinging that the show was too dark because it was giving her six year old nightmares and i was like "lady this show's a cert 15 in the uk, get out"

Buffy should be fine for anyone over the age of 10 or 11

My mom is obsessed with Billy Ray Cyrus so I have seen ... so many episodes of Doc, lol. Buffy is not a great show to watch with young children and the later seasons might be awkward to watch in certain company, yeah. But Buffy is the perfect show to watch as a developing teenager who ages with the show (I did). Doc... well, it's exactly what it set out to do, and that is to be Christian and uplifting and bland as toast so I can't fault it really.

This is hilarious. I assume you were at least middle school age? Also I had no idea this show existed.

It was an awful show.
