That's all a good point, but the further thing is, most of the teen bullies in fandom would have been "freaks" who sought out fandom anyway before it was mainstream. So I think instead of "normies" trying to sanitize fandom, it's fans trying to use fandom to play respectability politics and show the normies that fandom is actually very "normal." And so are they.
