even in Japan people usually don't make sushi at home, they go out for it.

that's not entirely true. temaki sushi is very much an at home thing & i recommend it for anyone who finds fiddling around with nigiri or maki too tedious. just provide little sheets of nori and then everyone can spread the rice on it themselves and put whatever fillings they like on it. like tacos but with sushi! :)

Agreed. I like a lot of deep friend dishes and they aren't actually hard to make, but the cleanup is a pain.

Making sauerkraut yourself. We bought a kit for making it, not realizing it actually takes months to make it taste right.

Lasange and moussaka. Just too much work.

Ketchup, mustard, or mayo.

Tried them all in an attempt to be a bit more DIY gourmet, but quickly figured out I really just wanted the taste of the brands I buy at the store.

Tiramisu. It takes so long. Ugh

Anything that you have you cook everything before mixing it together and cooking it for even longer.

Re: Tiramisù
Does it? I'm Italian and we regularly have tiramisù as a fast dessert. The worst part is mixing the mascarpone with eggs, sugar and coffee, but that takes like 5 minutes. The assembling takes 10-15 minutes, so in total, with brewing coffee and cleaning and all it takes 30 minutes tops and you don't even have to cook it.
Sure, you have to wait 2 or 3 hours before eating it, but it doesn't take much to do.

I reckon it's simpler to do in Italy, though. Here we have the savoiardi biscuits and the mascarpone readily on display. When I lived in a foreign country it was more of a hassle because I had to hunt for ingredients.

I got volunteered to make it for 20 people and had to go three different places to find everything I needed and at the time I didn't have REAL kitchen tools, so I had to do every bit of it by hand and the ladyfingers I got didn't want to absorb the espresso and it was all just not awesome for me, the non-Italian.

Angel food cake. I normally love to bake but what a pain in the ass, and I don't even like it, I was making it for someone else.

Fruitcake. Takes weeks to do it right and then no one wants to eat it because it’s fruitcake.

Honestly? Most food if you're only making enough for one meal. If I can't make three days worth in one go, it's not worth it.
