Sort of based on 4

Has anyone here rented new movies at home to watch? Or do you just wait for them to come up free somewhere?

There's not that many new movies I want to watch, unfortunately. I have rented older movies sometimes if there's something I really want to watch and it's not on free streaming.

I will right now if it is something I really want to see because I'm happy to pay for something good, and I can't safely go to the theater right now. I did buy/rent Black Widow on Disney Plus. And I would do the same for Shang Chi if they were going to have it on Plus.

I haven't really been enticed by anything for rent, tbh. If the new RE that's supposed to come out in November only came out for rent though and it was reasonable (like 4-6$) I would do it.

I've seen some rent prices that are like, theatre ticket prices and... nope. I'm willing to "pay" (I always ask for movie giftcards for my birthday so I can treat myself) for a theatre ticket is because I enjoy the experience.

Paying $18 to sit in my own living room ain't worth that.

...nothing is free. You pay for every streaming app.

Libraries, movie exchanges, free-to-air. You do have to wait months/years for those options though.

I check movies out of the library.

This reminds me, my county library system has finally opened back up for in-person browsing instead of doing online requests and curbside pickup only. Time to go to the library!

Millennial and i still have that little card. Got it a few years before it closed. I really miss going to the video store to select a movie. I go to the library now (aside from books, but also for DVDs and CDs). Still exciting.

right?? something about tangible copies, it's why things like vinyl came back, and why print books will never wholly disappear. a library at least lets you browse to see what they have, and who knows what forgotten gems have been donated or sitting in the collection for ages.

I pirate.

I've largely gotten out of the habit of pirating media in the last few years, but tbh every time I see what Google Play Movies charges I debate getting back into it.

As someone who made thorough use of movie-rental stores as a kid/teen, I find the fact that old-ass movies now cost new-release prices to be genuinely offensive. You wanna charge me six bucks (CAD) to watch the newest, hottest titles? Cool. But you wanna charge me six bucks to watch pretty much anything, regardless of whether it's new or old, popular or unpopular? Hell no. Also, we used to get to keep non-new releases for a week, and now we only get access for two days? Regardless of the fact that in the old days there was only one copy per store of most movies, so if you rented it that meant someone else couldn't, whereas now there's no real limit to the amount of people who can rent the same movie at the same time, and you're telling me the reasonable answer to that is to restrict people's access more??!

Nope, fuck that, I'll just steal it.
