Agreed. I wonder how shocked some of these people would be to realize that even some of their favorite authors used to write terrible fic and fanfic while they were still learning. Good books do not just spring directly from the skull of Zeus; every author starts somewhere.

IDK I think it's more flattering to assume they don't respect the humanity of gays than to assume they just think some people don't deserve to be treated as well as other people.

It's not a good line of thought. How are you supposed to fight prejudice if you're just going to assume that people who are prejudiced are actively and constantly dehumanizing? Sure, some people do, but most don't.

I don't think it's a necessarily logical or useful line of thought, and it's something I tend to abandon when I'm actually discussing gay rights with (or in the presence of) people who are against; but some days the only way to keep from screaming/despairing/what-have-you is to make that assumption.

I find it far easier to deal with "not human, so not deserving of rights given to humans" than "human, but not deserving of rights we give to humans".

Of course you do, and that's exactly why you can't fall into that line of thinking. It's easy to demonize your enemies, it's hard to understand and address them with respect even if they disagree with you on a fundamental level.
