133 OP

First off, thanks for reading my other replies and conversations before responding--that makes this a lot easier.

Despite, you know, things like comics came way before anything live action. Unless you can say comics/cartoons predate plays like Oedipus Rex and Lysistrata, I'm going to say you're wrong.

And yeah, I'll definitely agree that my wording was off. Maybe "I hate anime fandom" or "I hate otakus" would've been better.

Culturally, I would separate anime/manga from comics/graphic novels/western cartoons, though many of those are idiotic and stereotypical, too. Still, I see more original or "edgy" storylines pursued using so-called "western" style of drawing/animation than I do in anime/manga-style.

What you see doesn't actually represent what's out there, and it's idiotic to dismiss an entire genre based on a small portion that you've seen. Christ, anime isn't even from the west. How do you figure you can pass judgement on what's original coming from there when you see but a fraction of what's produced?

It's perfectly fine (if not painfully cliche and narrow-sighted) to hate otakus, but like the OP said, there's nothing specific about anime that prevents it from having emotional depth, unless you feel that animation cannot have depth, ever.

... yeah noooooo.

You disagree that different cultural assumptions and stereotypes are presented in manga/anime and comics/cartoons? Oh, sorry, I'd forgotten the fetishisation of schoolgirls in The Long Halloween.

No, I disagree that you see more "edgy" storylines in the so called "western" style. That's not to say there aren't any, but yeah.

You disagree with my account of my personal experience? :/

Re: 133 OP

Er, I meant "you see" as in the "anyone could see" kind of sense, not the YOU you kind of sense.

Yes, but I meant it in the personal sense. I was stating a general observation I'd had.

Please tell me you're not seriously using The Long Halloween as an example of serious, actually interesting storytelling.

Of all the stuff you could have named... The Long Halloween? It's not even a decent Batman story.

No, if you'll refer back to the comment, it's an example of a Western comic book that doesn't fetishize schoolgirls (and the first title I could think of that wasn't Watchmen, haha). I'm not here to discuss comics versus manga, really; I've got a whole different set of pros/cons there. xD
