That does make sense. I think she's fifteen, but I can't remember exactly, I read the article last week sometime. So, in my mind, that puts her out of range of a 12 year old partner (as I remember it saying he was at the time of the baby's conception), and she may have been fourteen then, but I remember at least in my own life, by fourteen and fifteen the majority of boys around you have developed to the point of looking more like adults and at least starting puberty. While I do agree that what you've said makes sense and is possible, it just strikes me as less likely somehow. But my reaction to the images of them together is very strong, so that could be clouding my judgment of the situation. The truth is no one except the kids involved could know, for certain, but I do think most people would consider any boy having sex before he's even started puberty as being inappropriate both because he's not sexually developed yet, but also because it's so unlikely that he has a real knowledge of what could happen after sex. A 15 year old girl who has already started menstruating should, logically, have a better idea of what sex is about than a 12 year old boy who hasn't even started growing body hair.

It is weird for me too--I can't imagine dating a 7th grader when I was in 9th or 10th grade. I admit I can't help but imagine her as being a little off or slow in her own development, making the whole thing kind of disturbing even if they aren't that far apart in age.

She may also just be heavy. Girls who are overweight develop secondary sex characteristics way before they're emotionally mature, because that's how the body works. Fat index brings puberty on because your body goes "hey, we've got enough extra luggage here to support a baby!"

She may not be any more mature than he is, just heavier. She may even have been held back enough that they're class contemporaries. We don't know.
