Even though I know this is all still part of the social media world where people now earn their living profiting directly or indirectly from the IP of others, I still find myself in the mindset that fandom is what you do for love, not because you can see a potential market and want to cash in on something popular.

If you need to monetize your activities through an established fan base, for whatever reason, I think we need to start acknowledging that it's not exactly a fan work. It's more the transitional stage between fandom and having a professional career - and I'm sure everyone can point to both authors and artists who've moved on to that level.

The issue of copyright is a whole other thing, though putting works behind paywalls such as patreon might also be an attempt to circumvent that. But I don't really know enough about how that works because I have to prioritise my subscription spending.

You can monetize your activities through an established fan base without monetizing them off fanworks, too. I have several friends who draw fanart and post it for free and use it to build a fanbase who then will purchase their original stuff/commission them.

That's the right way to do things.
