Honestly, I think they're (the writers) trying to MAKE her seem useless which infuriates me. Such an interesting opportunity to go beyond what the major writers have done with her in the past and then they go throwing it away. She's not my favorite character but I've grown to adore her and I hope she gets a chance to shine soon. Of course then, people are going to be throwing the Mary Sue label around...

You can't win when it comes to female characters, honestly. *sigh*

While I feel like Gwen should get more to do, I never felt like she was written as useless. Her strengths are just different from the others, though she did get to go butt-kicking at Morgana's side. She speaks less, but when she does, her words usually have profound effect on the characters (when she's not, well, you know, bungling them). In a way she's almost the conscience of the cast.

I also like that, while she seems to display interest for Merlin, Lancelot, (in the last episode) Arthur, and (with slash goggles) Morgana, the show never condemns her for the crime of being a teenage girl who *gasp* likes different people, which is actually a step above some shows.

It's like the writers want Gwen to be under the radar for irony's sake, but they indulge in this behavior, in my opinion, too much.

I agree with all of this. I can't believe people are calling her useless (I honestly haven't seen much of that, even if I've noticed more people saying she's their least favorite, and things like that).

But yeah, I think Gwen's lovely; and Angel makes the most of every moment she gets onscreen.

Under the radar is one thing, but they've got to start giving her storylines.

I've noticed that you (I believe) composed a link to Gwen and Morgana related recs. Thanks; when I'm not tugged away so by school I intend to go through them!

Angel is a doll, btw. She cracks me up so hard in the cast vids!

Angel is AWESOME. She's adorable and dryly hilarious and I pretty much love her.

Bradley + Angel + Shopping trip = lol.

For what it's worth, whoever wrote #133, I kind of know how you feel. Angel is terrific. Gwen's a great character in her own right even if she doesn't get enough screen time and I'm sure the show will break my heart too. It isn't that her getting together with Arthur would mess up the Arthur/Merlin thing that bothers me; it's that Gwen's sweet and she's the character I want most to get a happy ending, and I don't see how the writers can possibly give her a happy ending with Arthur. I'd ship Gwen/Morgana, Gwen/Lancelot, or Gwen/Merlin before I'd ship Gwen/Arthur, and wtf, that's the historically canon one (sans the adultery bit, blah).

I haven't seen a lot of Gwen-bashing, though. Even in Merlin/Arthur fics, fanfic writers usually make her Merlin's best friend and completely made of awesomeness, and she gets Lancelot or Morgana in the end. But yeah, the show? Can't possibly end well--it's like a train wreck, I want to stop watching but I just CAN'T.

You can't win when it comes to female characters, honestly. *sigh*
