118. I agree with you for the most part. Except for where you think that Jack/Ianto is a normal or well written depiction of a gay relationship, or that that shitty manip was actually a scene in the canon. I hate all the yaoi/shounen-ai stereotypes, and I agree that TW at least avoids some of them, but it is in no way remotely well written. There are so many better well-written gay relatiopnships out there to enjoy.

Yeah. They're not my cuppa, but I can see why people like them. (But I can also see why some people like yaoi/shounen ai. I don't like it, but I don't think people need to 'get laid' or stop liking it.) Really though, to lambast yaoi/shounen-ai in the same breath as praising Jack and Ianto's TW relationship... Honestly, Jack/Ianto slash is basically the western equvialent of yaoi/shounen ai. Trying to pass it off as some far greater thing is pretty ridiculous.

I don't know much about Yaoi/shounen-ai...but I do enjoy the Jack/Ianto dynamic. It lends itself to really interesting fics (that no one ever writes or if they do it get's buried 'cause everyone's writing ridiculously fluffy J/I fics with them having babies *headdesk*). Then again, most of the character interactions on TW lend themselves to interesting fics and pairings so...whatevs.

I find that most shows have characters that lend themselves to interesting fics and pairings, if the writer bothers to put forth the effort to develop it and doesn't settle fot the OOC "settling down with babies" trope. For me, the only thing Jack and Ianto have going for them is the fact that they have some canon basis. I mean, compared to Two/Jamie who would probably have a more . . . functional relationship, but who have only speculation. To me that doesn't make Jack/Ianto better or more . . . real. Because it's just as likely (if not down right probable) that Jack and Ianto will fall apart (or Ianto will [grow old and] die) as it is that Two and Jamie got together between the episodes.

But yeah. Jack/Ianto is definitely more interesting than most of the "weepy uke syndrome" you see in yaoi/shounen ai, but Ianto gets the "Weepy uke" syndrome thrust upon him a lot in fic.

As far as what we actually get in canon, it's a bit better. Ianto is definitely not as helpless as his uke counterparts in yaoi manga. Ianto actually looks of age and male, which is my big contention with manga these days. The Jack/Ianto dynamic is interesting. But it is not in any way a normal or healthy gay relationship. I'm . . . not even sure if you can call it a relationship. They have sex sometimes--and Jack has sex with lotsof people. More than that hasn't really been established, has it?

Quite true, and it'd be interesting to explore that. But no one ever does...(I haven't seen much of Two yet, I'm working my way through one, but I've seen the first episode of the "Rise of the Cybermen" serial and I basically fell in love with Troughton...)

Troughton is glorious. You have a lot of delightful things to look forward to, and it gets far more clingy/shippy than "Tomb of the Cybermen." (Which what I'm assuming you meant, as "Rise of the Cybermen" is New Who.)

But yeah. I've never read any TW fic (well, that's not true, but I've never read any shippy TW fic, just fic that also includes TW characters), but I've heard plenty of ranting on how badly they are portayed in fic. And I have more than on J/I friend who pretty much refuses to read fic on them at all because of how poorly written/cliché it usually is.

Not like that's at all limited to TW though. Most slash pairings are like that. The majority of most slash pairings are like that, in fact. It's why I read so little fic. Doesn't stop me from enjoying the potential of something else, though, or writing my own non!fluffy crap.

It pops up a lot. Indeed, that's why I've taken so long to really get into the TW fandom...and I'm still not even in 'cause there are the batshit Gwenhaters and the batshit Iantohater(s) (not sure if it's plural, but it probably is) who scare me more than a bit.
