118: So the difference between a good gay relationships and a bad one is whether or not you get off on it? Or is this that crap about how the worst thing a slasher can do is make the characters act "like girls"?

127: First of all, what's wrong with it "just being porn for faghags?" There's plenty of gay porn out there, most of which is ridiculously unrealistic (if you don't believe me, take a second to check out the Nifty Archive (http://www.nifty.org)). Men are allowed to get off on whatever ridiculous fantasies they want (including ones about two women having sex), so why shouldn't women?

Besides, not all slashers are straight women. There are tons of gay and bisexual women out there, along with a small number of gay and bisexual men. Where do we fit into all of this?

Would you apply this attitude to other sexual preferences? I'm a lesbian, does this mean that I can only read/write femslash? Are both of us forever banned from het, because we're queer?

And you may be a gay man, but you're not all gay men. Slashers are writing about two fictional characters who happen to share your sexual orientation. Stop over-identifying.

Hell, I know straight men who enjoy slash (or yaoi/shounen ai). I sometimes think they need to embrace their inner bisexual, but the point remains. Watching two guys getting off can be pleasurable for a man. He knows how getting off feels. He can mentally see how these things would feel good. Even if he doesn't want to do those things with another man, the taboo aspect and the obvious sexual issues can turn him on.

I mean, saying that gay porn can't turn on a man is like saying lesbian porn can't turn on a girl. It doesn't work for everyone, but there are always exceptions. And, just. Yeah.

People are allowed to enjoy wtf ever they want. Some people get off on Transformers porn, or furries or whatever weird shit. Having a fit over OMG YAOI/SLASH FETISHISHES MY SEXUALITY makes me laugh. What about all the horrible, horrible fetishized porn out there for het?

What porn doesn't fetishize someone's sexuality? Other than, you know, the porn that fetishizes their feet or hair or possibly the contents of their closet.

It depends on your definition of fetishization. To me, the term implies phony mass-market depictions of sexuality that sell on stereotypes rather than believable onscreen chemistry.

For instance, fetishized heterosexual sex might involve a woman being banged from all angles by the male partner, conquered and taken as a receptacle. The woman would moan in exaggerated ways and position herself in uncomfortable poses mainly meant to facilitate camera closeups of genitalia. All in all, it would be a cookie-cutter depiction of sex based on what the target audience expects out of porn - as opposed to an attempt to represent a hetero couple enjoying themselves in the bedroom. There probably are folks who partake in this sort of sex, so such porn might not be too far off the mark for them. Still, it's generally more about pandering than about showing a plausible moment between people.

I realize that this concept has gray areas. For instance, there might be real-life couple porn in which the partners take roles that some might consider fetishistic. Say we have a big gruff manly man who tops and a smaller pretty man who would rather bottom. Someone might want to film this couple to portray realistically hot sex and also to sell to audiences who expect the roles that the men happen to enjoy. Perhaps this would be fetishistic in a sense. Still, I consider it less so than the same roles being poorly acted by two men without any onscreen connection. Even though the men were meant to fit a masculine/feminine partnership, their chemistry would be a significant part of the movie's appeal. (For the record, I'd say the same about a pair of actors who could pull off a convincing couple. My concept of onscreen chemistry doesn't care about off-camera relationship authenticity.)

The only porn movie I've ever seen was "Debby does Dallas". It had sorta a plot... but it wasn't remotely typical behavior. I've seen lots of movies that had romance and couples with chemistry, and a few that even took them as far as the bedroom, but I wouldn't label them porn.

It's possible there is some arty porn out there that's designed to be aesthetic rather than dirty, but most of the porn I read/watch pretty much is about getting off by whatever means titilates the audience. Even the doujin porn designed for women do the unlikely poses for the purposes of showing off exactly how tab A fits in slot B.

If the main purpose isn't wank material, does it really count as porn? Isn't that more "erotica"?

That's a very good question - and one that I haven't chewed on all that much. I've seen erotica and porn used to distinguish between implicit and explicit styles of film and writing. Sometimes the terms are meant to judge whether or not the work has any literary or artistic value in addition to the sexy time aspect.

And value, of course, is subjective. Some might make this distinction in terms of content. (Example opinion - "If the sex scenes contribute to characterization and plot, great. If they don't, the rest of the work should stand on its own even with the sexy parts removed.") Others might argue that "gratuitous" sex scenes could have artistic value because of the style of their filmmaking or writing.

Sorry I don't have much of an answer, but I wanted to keep the discussion going. 'Tis interesting.

No, actually what you said is actually pretty thought provoking. I'm currently writing what I'm calling a "porn with plot" novel -- which I consider porn rather than erotica because as far as I'm concerned there's really no redeeming quality to the whole thing except as mindless entertainment justifying occasional wank material. But the porn is intrinsic to the plot -- it can't be removed. Its necessary to justify the characters behavior. So is gratuitous? Or not? It sure the hell is explicit.

Well said! LOL at nifty.org... I used to live on that website back in 2001-2002. In fact, THAT'S what got me into slash - accidentally stumbling upon it one night.
