I remember, from many years ago, about a supposed social experiment made in order to test how much a celebrity status depended on people THINKING they were famous. Something along the lines of researchers having someone walk in, alongside their legion of "fans" (both the "celebrity" and the "fans" knowing well what's going on), and then have people flock towards them just because they thought they were someone famous because OTHER people said they're famous.

I wish I had any source to that experiment as well as an explanation. If it is true, and if it can be replicated, then that would explain a disturbing whole lot about celebrity culture.

I'm old enough to remember when the media tried to make Paris Hilton a celebrity, and people just hated her immensely. So much that a news reporter placed said news into a paper shredder, and that people demanded her to be taken to jail for reckless driving under the influence AND on the opposite direction of the road.

However... that would explain a whole lot about celebrity culture. People being famous because some asshole with money says they're supposed to be famous.

She was a celebrity, though, and had her own TV shows and made a lot of money from endorsements/perfume/etc. Hated or not, she made $$$ from it (it obviously helps to start with a lot of money...) And she did, briefly, go to jail for her terrible driving.

+1

I was about to say, she definitely was a celebrity. I'm guessing she started off as a socialite aka comes from money hamgs out with other monied individuals that we the common folk have no clue about and then I guess she went for fame (a more public/mainstream? Fame)
