Scientist, slasher and Catholic? Does sound like an odd mix but so long as (as a scientist) you don't believe in creationism/earth-the-centre-of-everything/earth-is-younger-than-pyramids-and-devil-made-dinosaurs and you aren't likely to banish/try to harm any kids of yours for being gay or becoming Hindu or something (which, given the slash, seems unlikely) I'm fine.

I don't understand it but you wouldn't understand my take on religion so meh. Live and let live so long as no harm is being done.

And hey, Josiah Bartlett, the best fictional President ever, was Catholic! *g*

The oddest thing is how.... not actually that odd it is when you think about it. Aside from fiction catholic west wing characters the Pope isn't anti-evolution, I know another catholic whose a slasher and my former PM converted to the faith after he left office (he didn't do so whilst in it because the religious are seen as slightly cooky over here) and he wasn't conservative or anti-science.

So yeah. I've never seen any bashing of the religious or the non-religious in fandom really. Except the Phelps crew and those like them, but I think pretty much everyone hates their actions more than the fact they hold those beliefs.

I'll stop babbling on you now.

Hey, no problem ;). Long and short of it is, I think science does a pretty good job of nailing everything it can - the big bang theory, evolution etc - while religion fills in the gaps very nicely, by providing answers to things like "where did the material for the big bang come from?" and "why?".

But yeah :). Generally speaking, I've found fandom a bit friendlier than real life with regards to holding religious beliefs; and I think it does help that most of us, believers and non-believers aside, tend to be held together by our hatred of the Phelps extremists on one end (GOD HATES EVERYBODY WE DON'T LIKE, THE BIBLE TOTALLY TOLD US SO EXCEPT FOR THE BITS WHERE IT DIDN'T) and the Dawkins extremists on the other (PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE IN GOD ARE TOTALLY RETARDED).

Live and let live. Religious or not, 'tis a good idea!

*hands up shyly*

I love Dawkins, I do. Though I'll admit he does go too far at times, and most people who believe in aren't retarded. Just a few of the who are rather noisy. I'm not even sure that Dawkins thinks that per se, but yeah some of the firmer fundie nutters on my end of the spectrum do.

[identity profile] emerald-embers.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hence 'Dawkins extremists' :). Not 'people who watch his programs/read his books'. I find some of what he does interesting and some of it outright offensive, but on the whole he himself doesn't bother me too much; it's the people who virtually take him as their own god.

The very fact you didn't immediately launch a "CATHOLIC WTF DIE IN A FIRE" at the start of the convo was a pretty good sign you fit firmly in the 'reasonable and sane' category! He's certainly not as horrifically insidious as Phelps - and not doing as much damage to Christianity's image! - but same as Phelps, he does attract some noisy unpleasants.

Really, it's just a matter of no matter where you come from, you should question what you believe in at least once. Science isn't the only answer and the Bible sure as anything isn't infallible. Best to just draw your own conclusions!

I must've read it wrong, sorry.

And yeah, I've come across that. I've even heard someone ask him about it and he's not too fond of people doing that either - which makes sense given it goes against the idea of thinking for yourself, learning and being reational and so on. Valen, not a fan of the people who do do that.

True, that may have been a clue *g*

And no, science isn't the only answer... in a way. It is important and though it doesn't explain everything we're learning more and who knows what we'll find out in the future. Art and philosophy, imagination are just as important but in a different way.

[identity profile] emerald-embers.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dude, no problem ^^. Netiquette can be a bitch.

I love science for the fact that it appeals to the logical side of me, the part that sees there are measurable orders and patterns to so many things. I tend to like that old gem, "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." Shutting your doors to either is a) unnecessary and b) a little bit sad. No reason to be close-minded about one or the other!

Plus, I've often felt people who deny science on account of their faith are in denial about the strength of their own beliefs. Disproving Genesis doesn't disprove the existence of God. Disproving the Earth being the center of the universe doesn't disprove the existence of God.

God is an unquantifiable variable/idea depending on how you look at him/it, and as science doesn't have any bearing on the existence of something unquantifiable, faith shouldn't really have any bearing in turn on what branches of science are or aren't right.

Anyhow, it's been lovely nattering to someone else who can see there's a difference between thinking for yourself and being unnecessarily unpleasant to people who don't! I'm off to catch some Zs :).

117 and Evolution

[identity profile] andromedasfolly.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Catholics actually aren't required to believe in evolution. Good old Thomas Aquinas and Summa Theologica told that faith and reason don't have to contradict each other. In the Catechism, it says that:

"The question about the origins of the world and of man has been the object of many scientific studies that have splendidly enriched our knowledge of the age and dimensions of the cosmos, the development of life-forms and the appearance of man...prompting us to give [God] thanks for all his works and for the understanding and wisdom he gives to scholars and researchers."(CCC 283).

So yes. Speaking as a student of Sister Ethel (Physics) Sister Koehl (Biology) and Sister Goldkamp (Chemistry) Catholics WIN at science.
