I mean, there’s a difference between something being “wrong” morally vs. “wrong” artistically. Plenty of things are the latter but not the former.

I'll always be very firm in my stance that there is absolutely nothing wrong with people writing, making and enjoying OC's or even self-inserts, fucking around and doing something self-indulgent is more than good in my book. But at the same time other people aren't obligated to like or be interested in said content, so you can support the notion of OC's while not wanting to engage with them OP, it's not hypocritical at all.

This. There are tons of tropes/genres/characters/pairings I avoid, but there's nothing wrong with people writing them. I just don't like reading them. Self inserts/self insert OCs is one of these.

OP

That’s true. I am still a bit disappointed this fic ended up that way when it comes to my expectations, but that’s not the author’s fault. I support that they’re having fun 100%. I’m still following them for their other work, either way.

I appreciate this comment, thanks!

Nayrt
That sounds reasonable to me. Personally, I'd be fuming. You invested in 8 chapters and they pulled a bait and switch. Ugh...

Maybe not fuming. It's fic, not serious shit but if I was enjoying it, yeah, I might be pissed off.

hmm, I think there's a misapprehension here. Writers should do what they want, but if they want readers what they want either has to be what readers want or they have to suspend what they want for what will likely satisfy readers. I know fandom can be really prescriptive about OCs and Mary Sues, so I get what you mean, but fic is still a form of communication, and you can be a little prescriptive about how well a fic communicates.

You can think this is bad writing even if you generally think writers should write what they want to write. That's not mutually exclusive.

Heh, I save my self insert OCs for crap I never intend to post online!

Just quietly hitting the back button is indeed the decent thing to do. Let the author have their fun. Chances are someone else will criticize them for it at some point.

...and that's a super cute pic!

I would've been so annoyed at a work going OC-centric partway through, but mainly because I don't tend to read ANY works with prominent OCs. Like random minor characters? Sure, but I'm here for exploring the canon characters and that's pretty much it.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-19 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes walking away is the only thing you can do (as an OC enjoyer myself). It's annoying, but...hey at least you had a good run!

I'll admit I've walked into docs knowing full well how it was going to go (OOC canon characters, everybody loves the OC/the OC suddenly is a big bad since when??? And somehow the canon characters are still fucking good?! I don't know how to feel other than letting it go).

Of course, agreeing with the other anons re: I support people making OCs and having a good time, even if I'm not consuming their particular works. You're allowed to do that and I don't think it's hypocritical.
