174: Oh, me too. I've always worried about that. I started reading Discworld aged 11, when, in my mind, someone who was 50-odd was ancient and could drop dead any second. I can't put my finger on exactly why it won't be the same once he isn't around any more, though. I've read plenty of books by long dead writers. It's kind of strange.

Feel free to ignore my theorizing, but... I had a taste of this when Arthur Clarke died last year and I was inconsolable for a while, and everyone went around telling me he was ninety, old people do that, chill out, but I think -- mentally, we put living people and dead people into neat separate categories, and we expect them to stay there, and when there's a clear and present danger that they won't, it upsets us.

That makes a certain sense. I was a fan of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy before Douglas Adamse died, but I didn't actually know anything much about him, so it hasn't hindered my enjoyment of his books; he was just the name on the cover. Whereas I've met Pratchett, and heard him speak and do book readings.
