TOO in character? That's interesting. Makes sense if you're looking for more fantasy/escapism. I try to keep things realistic but at the same time, don't always take everything uberseriously. There definitely ARE fantasy elements in most pairings in fic, that I've seen, and I wouldn't want to read things that are too realistic, either. How much of canon is realistic anyways? We don't WANT to see mirrors of our own boring/sad/pathetic/whatever lives.

I LOVE to write awkward scenes, though -- those are my favorite. Sexual ones or otherwise. So, you might not like my stuff, either ;)

TOO in character? That's interesting.

Yup! I mean, it's not exactly a secret that fandom tends to make the best of its faves. It makes their flaws a little less unflattering, makes their strengths more pronounced, and contextualizes everything in a way that affords the character maximum depth and sympathy-factor. It's a pretty standard treatment; the fanon-ification of a character, if you will. Personally, I love it. There's definitely a point (different for all of us) where fanon-ification goes too far, and the character becomes bland and/or unrecognizable. But a little bit of tweaking is often just the thing to bring a character from, "I really like them," to, "I would die for them." Hell, sometimes that fanon-ification is the thing which takes a character from, "I hope they fucking choke," to, "I would die for them." (Personal example: Draco Malfoy in most Drarry fics.)

So if a writer rejects all fanon-ification and instead writes a character almost exactly how they are in canon, that can often be kind of off-putting.

I see what you mean. I remember feeling quite upset once when a friend pointed out, not unkindly, that Character A would probably never be as sweet and considerate of Character B as I was depicting if we saw it play out in canon. I was like WHAT DO YOU MEAN, HE CLEARLY LOVES HER AND IS WILLING TO DIE FOR HER -- and I do play up his flaws somewhat (they're ENDEARING... and yeah probably watered down some in fic!). The truth might be somewhere in the middle of the two extremes, but in my mind, it COULD happen the way I show it because canon has never showed us otherwise. I'm curious to see how people react to an upcoming chapter in my story where he's a complete dick to her (for Reasons, but still). Maybe I'll get called out for making it "too real" lol
