Unfortunately Hollywood is consistently, baffling awful at making badass girl assassin movies

I have no idea why this is but it's a very consistent pattern

what about Kill Bill?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-22 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Kill Bill but it did come out like 20 years ago. It's not really recent.

didn't know it had to be recent....

I mean... The question is whether Hollywood would do a good job at making a killer assassin movie with Zendaya, and I think more recent movies are more relevant if you're trying to answer that question, yeah.

And Kill Bill isn't just older, it's kind of an outlier in a lot of ways. Like, just the fact that it's made by Tarantino already makes it an outlier. Zendaya probably isn't going to get Quentin Tarantino to direct her hypothetical badass assassin girl movie.

little too much "constant rape of a woman in a coma" for my tastes

That's definitely a matter of taste. I loathed everything about Kill Bill.

It does seem like for every Atomic Blonde, there is a Red Sparrow and a The Rhythm Section.

My favorites:
The Long Kiss Goodnight
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Wanted (which isn't centered around a badass woman assassin, but does feature one pretty heavily)
Underworld

Not my favorites, but ones I still sort of enjoyed:
Salt
Point of No Return
The Quick and the Dead

Netflix releasing Kate and Gunpowder Milkshake within two months of each other (and both being bad) doesn't give me a lot of faith in where the genre is at right now, I think. And they also had Ava at the end of 2020 (which was also not good).

NAYRT

I thought Gunpowder Milkshake wasn’t bad. Not great, but not bad. It felt like there was a better movie buried in there.

I think it did very well with heightened aesthetics that make the female characters look cool without being hyper-sexualized.

Yeah, Gunpowder Milkshake could have been tightened up but it was a fun watch at least.

Hanna
I loved that the movie kicks off with her turning on a radio beacon when she feels ready to confront the main antagonist. I wish the TV show hadn't changed it to her getting found instead because she wasn't careful meeting with a boy.

Colombiana was on the okay side.

I mean.... it's not like the majority of dude assassin movies are particularly good either.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-23 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, they've made 3 John Wick movies so that's three right there

And they tried to make a knockoff John Wick girl movie (Hotel Artemis) and it was a bomb
