Well.

I'm not sure how Freddy is that much worse than other horror movie villains or, really, any other villains that kill a lot of people. I mean, Darth Vader got a canon redemption and his backstory is not that dissimilar - though, to be fair, the audience at the time wouldn't have thought of him as a child murderer. Of course, I say this as someone who reads and writes Hannibal fic, which generally lets Hannibal be Hannibal, so take that as you will.

I mean, even if we're going strictly by the "child murderer" yardstick and ignoring the pedophilia (which was hinted at originally, but not blatant like in the reboot), people tend to be more offended by that than the typical horny fake teenager victims in other slasher flicks. And Vader's canon redemption was much more about Luke than Anakin. Hell, some of the dude's last words were "Tell your sister you were right."

ayrt

Okay, but I'm pretty sure Michael Myers is a child killer (in more than one way, actually).

Yeah, but Michael's got that whole "messed up kid locked in an asylum for his entire life" thing to play with. Not saying I personally want to redeem Michael Meyers, but there's an angle there.
