I've had sort of a similar thing happen (though it's not got anything to do with RPF so that makes it easier to at least explain to friends who do some fandom stuff.) I headcanon my current favorite character as being really into soccer/football and a specific team because it's been mentioned in canon and I think it actually makes a really charming detail. I've always been vocal about hating the culture around sports and not wanting to watch, so I'm not really invested enough to watch games... but I find myself being sort of a poser-fan of the team just because I've had to do so much research on them for writing. I honestly wanted to buy a shirt I saw online for the team but felt like that was going too far considering I've never actually watched them play, lol.
