Spoilers for The Babadook

Because of the (significantly inferior) movie Hide & Seek, I spent pretty much the entirety of The Babadook assuming basically the same thing was going on. I.e. the “Babadook” was actually just the mother’s dissociated identity acting out her grief, rage, and self-hatred, as her main identity, under extreme stress, became less and less able to maintain waking control.

Even after I finished the movie I assumed that’s what it was.

I had to think about it a lot longer to realize it wasn’t meant to be that cut and dried. And that The Babadook was a better movie than I thought it was, because the answer to “What is the Babadook” is meant to be a lot more complex than I had assumed it was.

S!B - I'm not usually one to miss the point with overly simplistic takes, but in this case I did. I blame Hide & Seek! *points finger dramatically*
