I feel like Babadook was pretty divisive, so I can see why this is a secret! For me, The Babadook succeeded at being horrifying because the way it went about its grief metaphor really hit on my own struggles and fears with mental health, rather than the visuals and monster being frightening in and of themselves, if that makes sense.

I’ve gotten the sense that for some people who felt it didn’t succeed as a horror movie, the monster reveal is a big part of it.

(An example of the opposite for me was Vivarium - I really didn’t care about the suburbia metaphor, but was suitably ooked a few times by the wrongness of the creatures.)
