It’s become a fairly common practice for people to write trans characters into HP fics. There’s this idea (as expressed in a lot of A/N and tumblr posts) that’s like, “We’ll stick it to JKR by writing trans characters into the Potterverse.”

My secret is that I honestly don’t think it would bother JKR to have trans characters in the Potterverse. I think if you make a point of going, “Oh look, a pre-op transwoman is using a woman’s bathroom, as is completely her right and how dare anyone question that?” JKR wouldn’t like that. Or if you make your trans character below the age of majority and then stress that, “Oh look, they’re on puberty blockers, which they obtained with hardly any screening at all, as should always be the case for youths who want puberty blockers,” then JRK wouldn’t like that either. But just writing a trans character into the Potterverse? Nah, I think she’d say good for you.

I think people severely misconstrue the nature of her transphobia.

Yeah, Jo wouldn't have any problems with trans characters if they'd just piss and shit on the floor like proper wizards.

I think if you're still making fun of that one ancient tweet, you're probably the one with a fetish for it, not JKR (who didn't even write it herself, it was a Pottermore staff member).

I hate JKR for her TERF stance. I also think it's childish and annoying to keep bringing up a random bathroom joke from the Pottermore Twitter, especially when the discussion is real criticisms of JRK. These two opinions can coexist in mature adults, unlike you who thinks saying anything about JKR that isn't about how much she sucks means you're a TERF and a stan.

Yeah, it's a very specific and insidious kind of transphobia I see mostly from white, middle-aged, British feminists, wrapped up in concern-trolling for "women's rights". In fact, none of their arguments make any sense unless you assume, as they do, that all trans women are evil rapist men in disguise.

No, that's not it. The concern is that 'evil rapist men' as you put it will take advantage of the situation to enter women's bathrooms. Considering some of the ridiculous stuff men do to be able to sexually abuse women, that's really not a unfounded fear either.

It is an unfounded fear, because men who are willing to sexually abuse a woman wouldn’t bother trying to pretend to be a trans woman. They’re already committing a crime, so they don’t care about the law. And it’s not like claiming to be a trans woman would help in court, so there’s no reason to to pretend. So why are real trans women being punished just for existing all because of this hypothetical scenario?

This is something that doesn’t happen with remotely any kind of regularity. Anything is possible at any time, sure. But this is the only technically possible, but highly improbable thing that people act like happens all the time, without evidence. And only because transphobes like JKR crow on about it. It’s practically concern trolling at times.

A man disguised himself as a teenager to become a student at a school and abuse kids. There's already been at least one prisoner who claimed to be trans to get transferred to a women's prison where they sexually abused the inmates.

It is not an unfounded fear because men are trash, frankly. And some of them will go the extra mile to get access to their victims.

Two anecdotes does not a precedent make. Nobody is saying those two instances aren’t horrifying. But like I said, this does not happen with any regularity. While TERFs disingenuously claim it’s an epidemic, with no real evidence, or statistics to back up their argument.

Trans women are not only being denied their identity, but they’re straight up being dehumanized by TERFs. And all because one or two scumbags is enough to fuel their belief that this is enough of a problem to treat all trans women as male potential rapists.

As other people pointed out, trans women will suffer the same things TERFs wrongly claim already happens in woman’s restrooms all the time by being forced to use the men’s restroom. Not to mention trans men would be forced to use women’s restrooms, and many trans men would look infinitely more out of place than the trans women who have been using their preferred restrooms without anyone noticing for decades. And of course, cis woman who look even a little butch or “not feminine enough” have already been singled out by TERFs and other bigots who assume they’re trans women using the women’s restroom.

And I don’t know why you included the example of the man who pretended to be a teenager to infiltrate a school and abuse kids, because that has no connection given by you to the concept of a cis man pretending to be trans. So you only gave me one anecdotal example.

Nobody is disagreeing that men can be rather trash. But not only are trans women not men, but they’re being treated like dirt by TERFs just as much as the rest of society treats them horribly. And all because of a panic based on a handful of anecdotes at best, and purely hypothetical ideas of what COULD happen at worst. I know you’re not specifically saying trans women aren’t women, at least it doesn’t seem like that’s what you’re saying. But a lot of people who use these arguments do think that, and they don’t stop at just disrespecting identity.

By this logic we should treat all black people as pedos because of R. Kelly.

TERFs are tradfems full stop, they just want to look progressive. But all their arguments? Boil down to how weak and vulnerable and unable to protect themselves women are, while insisting they can "tell" while hitting cis women with regularity on their bullshit because their mental image of a woman is skewed toward tradfem conventionally attractive ultra femme.

Fuck your concern trolling, tradfem scum.

It's hilarious that people are out there thinking men are going to go through some Rube Goldberg machine antics of becoming a woman just to get into women's bathrooms to assault women when they could just, you know, be a man and walk into a women's bathroom when nobody's looking. Or corner a woman alone anywhere when nobody else is looking. That's not hard. Transitioning is.

Well no, I don't think she'd have a problem with a male character who's convinced he's a girl. As long as his delusions make him happy! (That's not how I see trans women, I'm just saying how JKR would probably see it.)
