The problem there is not so much the manga (which can be read either way) but that the mangaka has supported Japan's actions in WWII, particularly the brutal colonization of Korea, and said that Nazism isn't a bad idea, just "crude", and Japan did fascism much better. Some of the characters are named after Japanese military figures or (in Mikasa's case) a battleship.
