Do you have any examples? I haven't read any rewrites, but I'm thinking back to the original Grimm fairytales and a lot of them were pretty brutal, as I recall.

Yes. The Grimm brothers removed a lot of the really dark stuff.

I dunno, there was lots of rape (not necessarily called rape, but yeah), cannibalism, and maiming (limbs and heads cut off, blinding, etc.)
