Wait, OUaT? Not PotC?

Disney characters showed up in OuaT all the time (not just the public domain characters but even ones like Elsa, Anna and Merida) so it was probably a crossover.

Yeah, the idea is that Rumpelstiltskin wanted the compass she gave Jack (since it points to the thing you want the most) so it would lead him to Baelfire. I thought it would be a cool way to tie PotC (Disney property) into OUaT (Disney property).

Oooh, I like the idea of Rumpelstiltskin trying to negotiate and deal with Tia Dalma. Bonus points if Jefferson is there to add background snark.

Writing dialect isn’t racist. That’s just writing conversational language the way that it’s spoken. Writing dialect phonetically can be racist (or just annoying, Uncanny X-Men), and a lot of writers don’t know how to do one without the other. This is definitely one of those times when joining a writing group that includes more than one person who speaks the dialect you’re interested in can be a bonus. Luckily, it’s easier to find those than it used to be.

Like the person above me said, so long as you're not doing phonetic spelling you should be okay. You want to keep her syntax and her phrasing, mostly, the words she uses and how she structures her sentences, maybe some of her abbreviations. Especially if she's based off a live action/voice acted character that people have seen, they'll hear her voice and accent in their heads without you having to spell it, so long as you get the rhythm and vocabulary mostly right.

Yeah, I agree. Spelling accents out phonetically is just annoying no matter what accent you're doing. But using how she talks in general isn't wrong. You're portraying her as she was portrayed in the movie. If you want to get across her voice and accent, just describe how it sounds to the listener (not constantly, of course, but particularly when she first shows up).

And the actress was using her grandmother's accent and syntax! Listen to some Jamaican patois and you might get a better sense for the way she talks.

Thank you everyone for being so nice! I will take the idea of looking for more people who use that legit accent and trying to get the syntax down and maybe now that the fandom is good and dead I'll finally try my hand at that sequel!

(And thank you Secret Maker, for making my secret! <3 You're the heart and soul of this community).

As everyone else says, you don't write dialect phonetically. Give a very small flavor, use the cadences and only once in a while write the dialect. Use it sparingly and it will come across as a character and not a caricature.

Sounds like a good story!

What a wonderful day to remember how smoking hot Tia Dalma is

Naomi Harris is never less than radiant.
