undertale is so overhyped that i've never gone near it, especially when i can't even get a description of what sort of game it even IS without someone saying "ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod it's so good i can't explain it you have to play it" FUCK OFF

An adventure game where you play as a child who has fallen into an underground area full of monsters, sealed away. The monsters are largely wary of humans, but few mean actual harm. You can choose to go a No Mercy or Pacifistic route.

okay, so it's an adventure game, that's a start. is it a text adventure? action adventure? rpg? western rpg? jrpg? roguelike? what somebody who's actually played rogue would call a roguelike? etc

I think it's a puzzle/bullet-hell type of game. The battle system is turn-based, you have to dodge your enemy bullets with your soul (heart-shaped), and at your turn, you can choose to attack or to act, with act you can figure out how to pacify your enemies. There are some light puzzles as well. Both games are alike, but Deltarune is an involved version of the gameplay of Undertale.

RPG, think Earthbound-influenced (well, really influenced by many past JRPGs). But every enemy has a different bullet pattern/attack pattern. It is turn-based, but when it's the enemy's turn, you are moving and dodging (... or not dodging) in real time.

That actually makes it sound more appealing to me. I was already kind of vaguely interested just because some people I know who generally have good taste are fans of it (but the sane type of fandom, rather than the "omg omg I can't explain it" type mentioned above; I don't know much about it because they DON'T spray their fannishness all over the place), but wasn't sure the style/tone would be to my taste.

But I will forgive a multitude of RPG sins for an interesting battle system and a good soundtrack (and I've heard a few Undertale tracks at video game music concerts, it seems pretty solid).

I just grabbed the game out of curiosity; a group I discuss and do fandom stuff with was putting together an Undertale themed project, and the game was only 10 bucks on Steam.

I should also mention it is short as hell, maybe 5 or so hours on average. But as mentioned, you can go full pacifist, or do some version of a neutral route (maybe "pacifist" neutral or "kill some number but not all enemies" neutral), or you can just go full genocidal. Pacifist can't be achieved until a neutral route is completed, but if you go "pacifist" neutral (meaning, kill no enemies), I believe you'll complete pacifist sooner. Well, that was a lot of words to say there is variety.

And it also depends if you're the kind of person who likes to check out every little thing.

I'll mention I'm not a total fan of having to fight in real time unless it's like MMORPGs, but I let it slide here.

Why don’t you just look it up instead of asking people for a description if you care what it’s about even a little?

i've tried - it usually degenerates into either gushing or "can't describe anything about it without spoilers"

I get the frustration then, in that case.
