I didn't go to the comm, I admit, and I'm sorry about that. From the original secret, it appeared that the comm was started because girl characters aren't written about, and that's unfair. I agree that it's unfair women get the shaft, no pun intended. I agree it sucks that when someone wants to write a boyslash fic and there's a canon (or likely) female love interest, she gets either killed or turned into a bitch or left out of the picture altogether because OBVIOUSLY having a girl around destroys the yaoi. I agree that it makes me totally mad that boyslash authors can make their fics as dark or dysfunctional or complicated as they want, but het or femslash is OOC unless it's all sunshine and ponies because that's how love is when there's a giiiirl involved. (This has happened to me lately, and no, I am not bitter at all.)

But to me, this happens because fandom treats girl characters as "girls", not people. Usually, that's because of an aversion to girl characters. I don't want to go the other way where we're encouraged to write girls because they get left out and it's not fair, because that way, it'll still be about how they're girls. I can understand feeling an affinity for girls, especially awesome, badass girls, and preferring to write about them than men. That's cool. But the type of women that are usually awesome and badass are the type that are written as characters, not token females, who are just as capable of being strong or weak or herioc or villianous or complicated as male characters are, with those traits coming from their characterization, not their gender.

I guess I just want other fans to remember that hey, these female characters are characters, too. If you hate a certain rait or personality type on Josh, you don't have to accept it on Josie, but don't refuse to tolerate Josie ignoring a homeless man asking for money if you're okay with Josh, I don't know, shooting people. (I've heard that the fandom of the newest Gundam is like this- everybody hates the yandere, but the guy that's done worse things than her is still the recipient of much fan love.) I hope that doesn't make me a misogynist, and I'm sorry if it does.

And I think that's the problem. The comm isn't about being PC; in fact, if you looked, you'd probably find the comm and its organizers feel much the same way you do about female characters.
