I'm glad they're blocking instead of harassing but I can sympathize that it feels sucky to get blocked and wonder what you did.

I used to think kinning was harmless silliness, but now I think fans should be actively discouraged from getting into it. You're lucky you got someone with the decency to just block you. But I believe validating kinnies' feelings has played a big part in getting fan culture as toxic as it is. It's a way to threaten and cyberbully other fans for writing characters the way they want, because they can say "That character is LITERALLY ME, so you're disrespecting and hurting ME when you do that to them" so instead of knowing they're just bullies, they see themselves as standing up for themselves and fighting for their agency.

What is kinning?

This is going to be a really simplified answer and anyone who is into kinning will say I've gotten it all wrong, but basically it's fans (usually a little younger, but not always) who identify so much with a character that they claim they *are* this character. Different people have different interpretations of what that means, I've seen some who say it as like a "multiverse" thing where another world exists in which they lived as this character and they can unlock "kin memories," while other people are a bit less literal and just seem to be roleplaying but taking it too seriously, with the belief that they have a connection to the character that goes beyond just liking them. I've also seen more people now "kinning" multiple characters and I don't really know how that works, I assume it's like... believing you can access the emotions and memories of different characters on a psychic level? I don't really know how they explain that version.

Sometimes you might see young kids who seem harmless and it comes across as a trauma coping mechanism, but... usually "kinnies" are considered to be huge sources of drama and straight-up bullying in a fandom. No fandom with popular "kin" characters is ever very friendly. They seem to be drawn to situations where groups will implode and dox each other and launch callout campaigns full of libel about other kinnies, or any fan who interprets "their" character wrong. They don't have a great reputation in fandom is what I'm saying.

Let's also not forget that Final Fantasy House and the Suikoden cult just before it were otherkin who went way out of control and literally created cults out of people who where okay with indulging their behavior in real life.

Might be on Tumblr. There, you can still see posts by people who have blocked you, you just can't reblog or comment on them. So you might see something, try to reblog it, and that's how you find out you're blocked.

I'm glad their reasons for blocking you were reasons that could put your mind at ease, OP. It's totally fine that they did it, regardless of their reason, but it would probably bother me, too, to be blocked and not know why.

Most people I block haven't done anything wrong, they just post things I find irritating or upsetting for entirely personal reasons, and that I can't easily filter out. Blocking's a way to curate your own experience, not necessarily a judgement of the people you're blocking.
