Same. I don't think I've seen him in a lot of things (like, maybe not the movies that people are talking about when they say he's a great actor). But literally the only movie he's been in that left a positive impression on me was Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. All his other roles I've seen have left me very meh.

He's a fucking ham.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
More than that, he’s a ham I don’t enjoy. Some people can be delicious in their over-acting.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-07 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody actually knows what good acting is, I've always said this

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Do you mean it’s subjective? Or maybe that it’s more complicated than people think what makes good acting?

Either way, I think you’re right.

I think he's okay, but to me he's the wish.com Alan Rickman.

Also, I call him Gary Old Man for no particular reason.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
This feels right.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-07 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Blasphemer! Shame on you!

(Anonymous) 2021-10-07 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This is how I feel about Tom Hanks and apparently that's a grievous sin.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I find Tom Hanks more likable than Gary Oldman, but yeah, not blown away by his acting in anything I’ve seen

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
pretty sure tom hanks never beat his wife with a phone so there's something in his favor

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I'm aware, with regards to that both the courts and his children seem to have consistently said that Oldamn didn't actually do it

And that's not a cast-iron guarantee, obviously, but it seems like it's about as close as you can realistically come

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt - okay I actually looked into the matter again for the first time in admittedly a while and it looks like you are correct, which makes me a lot happier, honestly. I'VE always personally liked Oldman's acting and style but hated the idea that he was another abusive actor so this makes me feel better about liking him. so thanks. sorry, Gary Oldman.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT To clarify I don't DISLIKE Tom Hanks as a person, he seems nice enough, I just don't seem to like anything he's ever acted in. xD

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think he's fine overall but I will never quite get over how miscast he was in Harry Potter.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think I feel similarly, except with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

He didn’t match the book’s characterization of George Smiley. And when I tried to ignore the source material and take the film on its own, I realized that he also failed to establish a new movie character that I had any investment in.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt. I never read the book but when I saw the movie I thought he was an incredibly boring character. I couldn't believe that the main character in a spy thriller could be so dull.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
not sure about “great” but he was a pretty good Commissioner Gordon, imo

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding this.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I've liked him in a few things - over-the-top villains in Air Force One and The Fifth Element and the drunk actor in Friends. But, I thought he was miscast in both Dracula and Harry Potter.

And I've seen both True Romance and Lost in Space, but I have very little memory of his roles in either - Lost in Space was a pretty forgettable movie overall, and I think I've somehow amalgamated Wild at Heart, True Romance, and Natural Born Killers into one loud, violent fever dream of a movie.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
I like him best in Leon, so chaotic and menacing.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The only thing I can say about Gary Oldman is that I can never recognize that it's Gary Oldman.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is a big part of why he's considered a good actor. He's not the iconic leading man type, he's a chameleonic character actor.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I imagine his best roles were when he was younger. The photos on this secret seem to be from the time he already shifted into legacy mode/academy award waiting list.
