Re: Secrets you don't want to make...
(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 01:00 am (UTC)(link)Bonus Secret: the policeman Hwang Jun-Ho's plot was absolutely useless. It added nothing to the plot and ended nowhere.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 02:29 am (UTC)(link)it really makes you think...
you don't need any-school level of understanding of themes the show literally just tells you what it was about in the last episode. it's not that deep.
Re: Secrets you don't want to make...
(Anonymous) 2021-10-08 03:49 am (UTC)(link)Don't worry, I watched every episode and I got the themes. As the anon above me pointed out, they aren't very subtle about it. And I know enough about Korean current events and culture to even have some proper cultural context. Not thinking it's groundbreaking doesn't mean I didn't like it.
The reason I am pushing back on the heavy praise for Squid Games is not that I didn't like it, I did. I thought the acting was fantastic and the main plot was very compelling. My push back is pointing out that a lot of people and media outlets are painting it as this unique, groundbreaking show and when the creator first shopped it 10-ish years ago, people weren't ready for these themes.
Except that that was peak Hunger Games. And the creator says he was reading a lot of Battle Royale and was wondering how it would work in a Korean context. So the praise on this basis is... just wrong. It's great to see a K-drama breaking through worldwide when even similarly themed works from other foreign countries didn't break through. But to bring so much attention and praise to the brilliant, new themes is just misleading. Even praising it for the worldwide attention, well, Parasite did it first on both counts. It's great (I love seeing more people consuming media from other cultures) but not groundbreaking.
In this case, sure, like it, watch, enjoy the performances and the themes; but like it for what it is, don't hype it for something it's not.
And I stand by my assessment of Hwang Jun-Ho's plot. The creator put it in after changing his script from a movie to a tv series and it feels like filler.
