I had no idea there's a musical adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac starring Peter Dinklage coming out in December, and at first I was super excited.

I still am, really, but after going looking for more info, there's people saying Dinklage can't really sing, and that makes me sad. I love Cyrano de Bergerac and musicals and I've enjoyed Dinklage in everything I've seen him in, but musicals where the lead(s) can't sing* annoy the shit out of me.

*(Looking Glaring at you, 2004 Phantom movie.

Those people may not like Dinklage's singing (his voice has a bit of a rough, raspy quality to it that some people find ofputting), but they are objectively incorrect in saying he can't sing. Even if you ignore the fact that he was the frontman for a band prior to his acting career taking off, he's sung for several events since, across enough genres to make it clear that he actually does know what he's doing.

Yeah, it annoys me when people go "that person can't sing!" when what they really mean is "I don't like the sound of that person's voice."

Comment OP here and sometimes what I mean is "they sound like shit singing the thing they're singing because their voice isn't suited to it, I would like them fine singing something that fits their style and timbre and range."

And then sometimes what I mean is "if I have to listen to one more word out of their mouth I'm gonna poke out my eardrums with a stick."

AYRT--that's reassuring, although since so far as I know this is an entirely new musical specifically conceived to star Dinklage, and not a film adaptation of an existing Cyrano musical, it's annoying that the composer wouldn't write to Dinklage's strengths as a singer.

Like, my bitching about the singing in the 2004 Phantom musical mostly stems from two of the three leads not being able to handle the material as written.

But if you have someone who sounds to best advantage singing rock music and they're the star of a newshow, write them a rock musical.
